October Skywatch
The best action happens on the 7th, from 4:30 to 6:30 a.m., when
Venus is high and absolutely dazzling at its greatest brilliancy. Look
for a beautiful tight bunching of Venus, Saturn, the blue star Regulus,
and the crescent Moon. Venus and Saturn are closest together from the
11th to the 15th, and they are especially striking before daybreak when
viewed with a small telescope. Mercury starts to appear in that
vicinity, too, during the last days of the month, but it is much lower
than the others. The Moon makes its closest approach to Earth for the
year on the 26th, the night it is full; its surface will then be
approximately 221,688 miles from ours.
