oh yeah there are after market warranty companies.  the cheapest i have found was $2400 to carry out to 100k, but i figured that i could take however much i would pay for the warranty and self insure.  i think the most expensive replacement on warranty would be a transmission (may be wrong), but i imagine that mine will last until i have at least $2400 or more saved up.  Of course I am taking a gamble, but at least I am in charge of the money and I don't have to worry about what the warranty company may or may not decide to cover.  i have heard just as much bad as I have good about that. 

just a piece of advice beware of continental warranty.  they have a real high pressure sales strategy.  i advise anyone to not do business with them.  - larry

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted but I have been really swamped with work and travel.  I would like to announce the 2008 MINIs at the 25th Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival Parade sign up list.   

Pre Parade staging at Sonic Drive In.  Post Parade lunch at Malibu Macs after the parade for lunch.  Both restuarants are located in the Red Mill Commons Shopping Centeron Nimmo Parkway in Virginia Beach.

Lots of turnover in a car dealership.  Bob Turner is the only person at CF MINI that has been there since I first walked through the doors over there in 2005.  Hope all is well with both of them.
