I need some recommendations for a local source that will be able to chrome some wheels for me.

Thanks!

Only, way to get chrome done is to send it to California or try

I asked four guys including the auto body instructor of CCST - who do you use for chrome plating around here:

all said - Royal Plating of Norfolk - that's the local guy. (one called him out by name, followed by colorful words refering to the price you should expect to pay.)

Does he do the work there?  Yes, usually - but larger pieces must be sent out now as he's scaled down his shop (getting out of the business?)....a change in the last few years.

Sent to where?  Richmond - there's also a great place in Richmond...and they can handle larger stuff; I had to take my Comet' bumpers there.

Ever had anything sent beyond Richmond ? not sent, I took it there and why would I do that? (no wheels mentioned)

What's large?  Bumpers go to Richmond, the grill from my Comet was done in his shop. (about 3 foot by 8 inches maybe....)

You're sure he does work there?  Yes, I saw the facility and the work in progress.

All the restorers use him?  Yes, he's the most expensive in town, there are others, but his work is far and away the best. (the group has members of the local MG, Triumph and Classic Car Club of America groups - plus one hooked to the local auto body shop community)

Does he do wheels now?  Don't know, call him, but expect to pay big bucks.

Can Richmond do wheels?  No question......yes.

*******************

Now if you say he, if I follow u, Royal -  sends all wheels to CA - that's a different question.  There ARE chrome plating shops here, Royal is not the only one - but is the one people use.....yes I have ads for shops that specialize in plating wheels - they ain't all in CA - some r. (Participate in a car show and odds are you'll get a goody bag with several flyers for such services...I toss 'em as I'm not in the market right now.  Pickup a car restoration rag, and find dozens)  If Royal is no longer interested in doing wheels & sends 'em to CA then I'd pick up the phone and call the other locals, Richmond and Lorton and others.....or ship the wheels to CA if it makes you happy.  Or just buy chrome wheels

Can I recommend a shop to do wheels - no

Do people do plating between here and the west coast - duh - I've had plating done (for CG) at a dozen places on the east coast....every homeport I've served in.  ("all plating is done on the west coast") (Naval shipyard and NORSHIPCO/BAE have plating shops)

Is the west coast the only place you can get wheels chromed - duh #2

Is there a place on the west coast that specializes in wheel chroming that someone might recommend or even refer to - yes there is/are, but no recommends here

Is sending to the west coast the only way to get it done - no

How much will this cost - sounds expensive...I suspect you could get a really cool powder coat job for a fraction of the cost.  Several people have had wheels powder coated locally - Fuzzy for one I believe.

+++++++++++++++

Why did I reply to this thread, given the opinion appears I don't know s--- about the issue? cuz no one else offered anything; they only decided to say I was wrong after I tried to help.  Come by Sat and tell me how we screw up the Aero grill install too.....or offer your garage & do it right. :oops: since I spend time both working on an older car and associating with people with older cars and a subset of the autobody repair/painting crowd I THOUGHT I could offer some HINTS based on the resources I have available ... and it appears I use search engines more than many.....

I'm off this soap-box...but count down my tech days.  We sold the house Saturday.  It was on the market for almost 6 hours.  Soon you'll need to come about 800 miles to spill oil on my floor. aka, find some one else you can refer work to.....

{VENTING suspended} - still HAPPY to help anyone Sat' ... just surprised that CF sends work my way.....work they don't want/can't be bothered with/don't want to admit they have no interest in.....  [Hey-didn't that new grill void the warranty on the entire exterior finish and rust prevention? ] OK, it isn't CF - it is people who give my # trying to be helpful .... (cuz if I can do the work I don't charge ANYTHING) ... they just WORK at CF. }

I plan to buy a Clubman as soon as they come out....not heeeeerrrrrreeeeee tho.....

sorry gang .... I'm fed-up

don't e-mail "I won't send you any more work" ... moot point .... you can't come end of May .....

I'll be in the garage at 1:30 pm come Sat and nothing gives me greater joy then to share the little I know, and the tools I have, to help you enjoy your ride a little bit more....and maybe help you understand your ride a little bit more.  I'm a teacher at heart.  If we can kabitz and after a couple of hours you are no longer afraid to change a brake pad or install some driving lites FANTASTIC.  Even someting so small as a piece of rubber tube on the shop vac that allows vac' out the sparkplug socket b4 putting in 'the good ones' & ensuring the crap don't fall in the cylinder....to see others do the task themselves with a little facilitating....thanks! I needed that.

A little late here, but Richmond is Les at Hanlon plating. Richmond Bumper, where both me and Regina worked at once, used to us him a lot. They still will in a pich, but prefer to send stuff to Atlanta (I think) to have things triple plated (brass/nickel/chromium) for a better deeper look. I also have a wheel shop 4 dors down from the shop. I'll ask  him too.
