Not exactly sure where the axle nuts are, guessing the are by the hub, but if you don't catch it in time it could damage the axle at least.

I was looking at the service manual and I'm guessing you're right, the axel nuts may be what connects the steering knuckle to the hub.  There are four bots there.  As Jenn said, when I looked under the car I couldn't find any bolts that looked like they had backed off at all.  It would probably be prudent to have it looked at however I think I'd rather take the car to Mike at Sports and Imports rather than MINI where I know I'm going to end up with half a dozen "must fix" items.
