So I am thinking for our first project we could do a quick, easy lap quilt - just something that can be done in one day and learn all the terms, steps, and some of the tricks. I'll post the particulars (what you need, what you don't, what the pattern looks like, what you are in for - mawahahahah, etc.) later.
But for now - vote for a day and time. I am thinking this project would take me about 3-4 hours. Given an unknown number of people (yeah, I lost count, how many were into this?) we are looking at closer to 5-6 hours, lol.
Thoughts? comments? questions? suggestions?
VOTE!

Ooops - guess I should have checked that mythical Mini calendar before I posted dates. Well, I really don't want anyone to have to choose between Mini events and sewing stuff so why don't I change the dates, get rid of the July 14 and 28 dates. Keep the July 21 option and well, heck the next Saturday is Aug 4 - that's a little far off for me to say I got nothing up especially since I am going to want to go out to Monterey in Aug to see Scott before school starts. Well shucks. Let me think on this a bit - lol. Peace, R.

I voted for July 21 - 10am, but 11 is OK too.
I'm gonna need all the direction you can give. I haven't sewn anything in almost 30 years.

Do you have to have a machine?

Do you have to have a machine? I will have my machine available for "community" use. So no, if you don't have a machine, you can use mine. If you DO have a machine and it is fairly portable, you may want to bring it - the more machines, the less waiting for someone to get done. Also, my machine is the super-whama-dyne one with a 1000 buttons and a million settings. SO- yeah, not a real good starter machine and may be a little harder to learn on (I've had it a year and not only do I still have to refer to the small phone book they call a manual from time to time but I have only used about 1/4 of all the features.) I do have an older Singer (older meaning about 40 years old) in the closet. I'm thinking I may take it down and have it tuned and serviced before all this starts so we have a second machine AND a machine that is a little less complicated. Hmmm, let me think on that one. Peace, R.

I think I've got a stapler  I just went and pulled the old singer out of the closet - and by old I mean manufactured around 1940 or so - - - I'm thinking that the stapler may be a viable option! While the super-whama-dyne Brother is electronic and space age and cool, thus really complicated, the old Singer (tho a workhorse in its own right) is complicated in the other direction. Dear god, how did my Grams EVER get anything sewed on it. The threading path looks like a collaborative effort between Rube Goldberg and a highway engineer! I'm going to have to reteach myself how to sew with the dinosaur before I even try to show anyone else, lol, but AFTER it goes in for a service and tune. The last time it was serviced and oiled, Regan was probably president. Peace, R.

Well I did, sew at one point, using my moms "thing" not sure if it was old or not. However; I know I can't bring it...so I may be able to find one elsewhere....hmm.....will you have enough outlets to accommodate a few?

If you find a machine to bring cool, if not - no big. Between cutting and pinning and instruction and the half a million other things (not the least of which will be gabbing, I AM SURE) I don't think having just two machines will be a huge problem (but 3 or 4 would so rock!) Peace, R.

My granny had a singer that you had to peddle to get it to sew. And yes that was what I learned to sew on.
I have a machine that is really old and needs work it is in storage right now. Since we are looking at July 21 maybe for this I may be able to get it tuned (if it is even tunable).
I also have a cutting wheel and pad if we need one.
When I helped my granny make a quilt it was all done by hand. That was how I really learned to sew. And yes there were electric lights then too.

LOL - I have a treadle machine upstairs also - I wasn't going to mention the 100+ year old machine because there is NO chance of us using it. The belt is almost dry rotted and I don't even want to think what I would have to go through to get another one, never mind trying to carry a cast iron machine and deck down a flight of stairs and out to a machine shop to be serviced - FORGET ABOUT IT! lol Don't worry about trying to dig up your machine if it is going to be too much of a hassle. I have two self healing pads but only one rotary cutter so if you want to bring your cutter, that would be awesome! The very first quilt I ever made was hand made as well. It's an embarrassment to quilts everywhere. I hide it in my room to protect it from the other quilts who might decide to tease it, pick on it and generally humiliate it. Peace, R.

LOL make sure you keep it hidden well, I hear that machine made quits are really tough.
And it will not be a problem getting to my machine by then. I am suppose to be in my new place on the 1st.
Is there anything else that I could bring?
I know that I did not get in on the original thread (lol) about this and express an interest but really would like to particpate if there is room.

I've got a Bernina that is quite portable and ready for use - it's been in the closet for too long - will drag it out and make sure its ready to go :) Do you have morden plugs (3 prong) or do I need to bring my adapter to plug in the 2 prong to make the 3 pring machine work? Laurie

Lelane - I'll be putting up a list here in the next few days about materials and such.
Laurie - the dining room where I think I am going to clear working space has mostly two pronged outlets BUT I am probably going to bring down the surge protectors to use which are three pronged.
For All - More details to come!
Peace, R.
PS- I am actually getting excited!!!!
