I think this is the right forum section for this.

I have had something weird happen to Fiona today and while in my gut I am pretty sure this means a trip to the Mini Hospital (i.e. Checkered Flag) I am hoping someone knows what's going on.

On Monday afternoon I filled Fiona up. I have driven about 40 miles on this tank of gas. This afternoon I came out after an errand. Fiona had been sitting about 45 minutes. When I parker her the gas gauge said "full" and the electronic counter said I could go about 270 more miles or so. When I came out after the errands the gas gauge said "empty," the red idiot light was on and the mile estimator said "0." I turned off the car, opened the gas cap, restarted the car and still the empty/0 readings. Knowing that even if someone siphoned me while I was running errands, I should still have enough gas to get home, I got out on the highway. As I drove the gas gauge slowly crept up and the mileage estimator crept up. I traveled 10 miles to home and went up to just under an 8th of a tank and the mileage estimator reads about 40 miles left on the tank.

Yeah, I know, sensor went bad or at least went wonkey. Still under warranty, call checkered flag etc etc. YUCK - talk about bad timing - I have a contract and start my new job on Tuesday with about 1000 errands to run before than. I really don't need this now, lol. But I thought I would throw my problem up here and see if anyone has had this happen to them and what the solution ended up being. Also, am I screwing something up by continuing to drive Fiona until I can get her into the Mini Hospital?

Thanks for the help folks!!!
Peace,
R.

Oh .... some help you are! Remember that purse that is half done? Want it to stay that way? No? Than put away the "snark" and try to be helpful -  :smt016

Unless you are volunteering to show up with holy water and a bible, the suggestion that Fiona has grown a deamon doesn't help!!!!!! LOL

Riqui... I'd say the priority is the job for the moment.  Call CF and make an appointment to drop it of and to have a loaner on hand, it'll end up taking 30 minutes out of your schedule on any given day to drop her off.  It'll be ok... just make sure you mind your odometer and fill up every 200 miles in the meantime to be safe.

Thanks Ben .. I'll call and see when I can wedge in a drop off to Checkered flagg. Until than. I will be sure to keep her fullish.

Just didn't want to do any damage using her until I can get her in. And wanted to see if anyone else had had this same problem.

Peace,

I would think the service manager at CF could tell you if their were any danger in driving your car with the problem as you describe it.  That would be my approach.

Riqui,
This happen to CAR4DOG in late July - it was not 1 but 2 faulty sensors in the fuel tank - the car had to stay at the dealership for 2 days - UGH- but Frank got me a loaner and all worked well.  If you would feel more comfortable - I presently have both cars and can loan you one - F1 PLZ is going in on Monday for a cold start noise - so it will have to stay there for a few days :( but if you need a car till then let me know.

Laurie,

Thanks for the offer but that's okay. I am going to call and schedule taking her in when they have a loaner for me and I have no reservation, hesitation or anxiety using (and think the very worst interpretation of that word) their loaners.

If worse comes to worse, I always have the pick em up truck.

again, thanks for the offer but I'm good. I just need to find a few minutes in the schedule to drop it off.

Peace,
R.

sounds like you have a couple bad fuel senders. seen a few of those here and there. seems to be more frequent now that the gas has ethanol in it some times upward of 20% not the 10% that they post on the pump

I have had this happen to be about 4 times over the last 4.5 years. Never took it in because it always seems to fix itself. Now I wish I would have taken it in when I still had that warranty, but I hated taking my car to the Italian BMW dealer, and CF is not conveniently located.

Shouldn't cause any major damage though. Good luck! I will be waiting to see what the fix is!  023

Dare I even ask how your schedule is going?  Any good news to share or is it SSDD?

OK, I realize this is a really old thread, but I had this problem occur tonight.  I filled up at the gas station around the corner.  Started my MINI, and the gauge read empty, red low-level light lit, and "miles to empty" showed "---."  Info on NAM is kinda sparse, but a couple of other forum posts hinted at the fuel level sensor going bad (there is one in each of the two tank halves).  I was just about to schedule an appointment when something told me to just jump in and take a late night drive.  I drove up to Exit 238, got off the interstate, went up the street to a parking lot, and cut my MINI off.  Started it back up, needle came right to the full mark.  Drove home, cut it off, then turned the key back to the starting position.  Needle came back to full mark again.

I will keep an eye on this, but I'm currently treating the problem as a fluke.
