Question - there's a thread on NAM that says MINI has begun using wheel sensors for the flat tire monitor. My car is one of the newest in country having come off the boat just last week (nice to live near the port, trucked Monday & delivered tuesday) I see no hint that this is the case either on the car or in the manual.
Has it changed?
Is the change in the works?
? is aimed at CF folks..... any real poop from BMW????

Soo... something in the wheels themselves, as opposed to the existing abs sensor?
That would be irritating to me, because who wants to be stuck with stock wheels just to keep that as an option? Or is it something that could be moved elsewhere?
Good catch BJ... keep us posted on what you might find.

according to my dealer here - the change happens in 08's ... however the poster on NAM says their stems clearly read 'TPM inside'
could it be they are putting the stems on some wheels but the change hasn't happened inside yet???? The system can be added to a wheel/stem at about $60 per I believe.... I think I'm glad I snuk under the wire

Just a note- the sensor can be removed, the valve stem cut off, and the sensor itself epoxyed onto the inner side of the rim of your choice if it is similar to the ones on Nissans (and likely many other manufacturer's vehicles). They can be quite pricey to replace- the ones for Hyundais are $148 each on the new Sonata. I've yet to see this particular sensor or a recent BMW unit but I would guess they're all quite similar. As such, the swap to an aftermarket wheel is a pain in the butt (and if they need to be recalibrated with the new system, a bit more so) but it can be done. But the good news is there is still freedom of choice.

That is the truth about the new flat tire monitoring system using sensors on the inside of the wheel. It is not something that is starting in 2008, it was a running change in 2007 models.. If you just recently picked up your car, I'd say within about 2 months or so then they should have the new system. I think they started it in August production. The sensors are on the inside of the wheel and The newer MINI wheels are designed for the proper fit of the sensor. Now I am no tech so whether or not you could just throw the sensors on a different set of wheels I don't think that would be the case. I know that it does have to deal with an actually sensor andpossibly something with the stem. It has been on BMW's how a bit now, because it allows to individual monitor tires separately. If you guys have more questions about it, I can find out more, but this is what I know of the new system!

One way to tell whether or not you have the system is if you look at the stock valve stem caps, they are not little things, they're huge with a round flat top. I will work on a pic of them, but I think it was august production that it started. I will check out some of the production dates on cvehicles that we have here. I have one on the show room that was July production that does not have the new system, so it make just be august. i will report back!
