On my morning commute on 64W, the area from Indian River Rd to the 264 interchange is a hotbed of HOV violators.  Why do they do it?

Because they're SELF IMPORTANT! 078  Or if they drive a hybrid they have the priviledge to drive solo in HOV.

T.J. I have a question regarding that particular commute; Does the magic white line help any with the beach-bound exit? I used to commute to Norfolk from VB Indian River area for a few years and the white line was pretty new when my work days in Norfolk ended.  I'm just curious because that area was a real "fill in blank here" with ppl cutting you off all the time to get to the beach.........

It seems the "double do not cross me magic white line" works much better than the HOV restriction begins at Indian River Road signs.  I don't see too many people crossing the white lines.  There are a lot of Indian River on ramp people who seem to be in an instant panic when they merge - I guess they are scared of getting trapped on the wrong side of the white line...they essentially come on the highway and immediatelly move as far left as they possibly can - with no regard to speed.

I'm not sure why I think it's ok to speed, but not ok to violate the HOV lane - but for whatever reason I really root on the VSP when they pull the violators over.

The worst is SUVs and Mini vans with tinted windows - I really doubt that most of them have a kid in the backseat at 0630, but they act like because they could be carrying 7 people they have free access to the HOV lanes.

Yes, I feel your pain.  I was on I-64 East just past J. Clyde Morris Blvd. a couple of years ago when someone blew by in the HOV during rush hour.   093  He came up behind a Virginia State Police officer and tried to duck and sneak through the normal lanes of traffic.  The officer immediately saw him and slowed down to get him.  One point for the cops!   003

I count my blessings everyday, knowing I do not need the Interstate sytem to make my daily commute. When my radio wakes me Monday thru Friday, the first thing I hear is the traffic report, and I just can't imagine for the life of me what the drivers are doing that flip there cars over, and break down so routinely.

If I had to drive any real distance regularly, routine maintenance would be a high priority, not that it isn't antway. Never the less, why do so many Americans act the way they do on the highways when something as simple as going to bed a half hour earlier, and waking up sooner could eliminate so much of the unnessecary daily stress.

Bringing all that frustration to the roads daily is what those of us with enough time to do what we need to do witness in the HOV lanes as well as all the other "Lanes of Madness".

Perhaps the rapidly rising cost of gasoline will slow down some of these folks?

I agree that the area over the twin bridges is terrible.  I don't think it helps that the HOV lane restrictions are removed on that lane from battlefield to Indian River due to the construction project.  I figure that people just hang in the lane.  As far as that "Do Not Cross the Solid White Line" or "Do Not Cross Double White Line" BS, that is irritating.  The newest one I've seen is coming out of the Downtown Tunnel on the Portsmouth side.  They put the "Double White Line" there to discourage people from trying to take the Effingham Exit from the left lane, because all that does is mess up traffic for the whole tunnel.  People cross this all the time and so it has had no effect.  I think in places like those lines, VDOT should be more like New York.  In the tunnels, they have these things that are like the road tubes you see in road construction only they are flat and only about 3 in wide.  They break over if hit so a large truck from VDOT wouldn't be restricted if it had to go through and can be reset up.  On that area over by 64/264 exit they need those large round bumps that are about 7 in in diameter and about 4 inch high set up along that line, I wanna see one of those lowered little rice burners try to slide in front of me then.

There needs to be a sign before the tunnel that tells you to get in the right lane for Effingham St...the way it is now there is no way to know until you get there that you are not supposed to change lanes and that gives people an excuse to do and they figure if they get caught they can plead ignorance and probably just get away with a warning.

Instead of double white lines I'd rather see spike strips.

As far as a sign not to change lanes before the tunnel, there is one.  But leave it to VDOT to put it somewhere you will never see it unless you are stuck in traffic not moving and have nothing better to do but look around.  just past the inspection station on the right up on top of the wall is a tiny little sign that says not to cross double white lines.  I didn't even know it was there for about two months after they put the double white lines at the outlet of the tunnel.  it is fun driving a large Gov't truck when someone gets mad because you won't let them over.  Bigger can sometimes be fun!!!!
