Well everyone, since I will be moving to the area, and not knowing/understaing laws is not an excuse to the Fuz, I have a few questions. Are there any requirements on owning a firearm, as I have a 12 gauge shotgun and a 22 revolver. What is the deal with radar detectors? Around here, 7MPH above the speed limit, is normally ok, except for the end of the month when it is no more than 5MPH, as it seems to be a state law for issueing citations. Any laws against certain breeds of animals? I am looking at getting my wife a wolf hybred. And yes there are areas that prohibit them. What are the local laws governing smoking? I am working on quiting, but I still do, just need some help in that area. And what does it cost for fishing permits? I am looking at starting to salt water fish so.... Thanks for the help.

I'll do my best.... Weapons... well, it's still America, so own whatever you want. I have a good buddy with a freaking vault full of stuff. 12 ga and a .22 isn't going to be an issue for anyone. Special permits are needed for Class 3 full automatic weapon purchases I believe. Concealed carry is an option here, also by permit. Radar Detectors are illegal, and they pull people over whether you were speeding or not. Well, at least they pull me over for going 70 in a 55 on the highway, despite the fact I was going 60. Proceed at your own risk. Dogs... depends on what locality you settle in..check local statues. Most local governments have regulations online. Smoking... still very legal, though many localities are working towards forcing bars and restaurants to be smoke free. Remains to be seen if that'll pass. Remember this is Virgina..built on tobacco! Can't help on fishing permits... I don't fish here.

A little more on what F15e wrote. A lot cities require a purchase permit for hand guns but not for long guns. There are no restrictions on registering any guns you currently own just when buying new ones. They will at least do a back ground check when purchasing any firearm. Concealed weapons permits have goten easier to obtain but if your caught carrying without a permit I think It's automatic jail time but I'm not sure. It would be very bad either way.
Radar detectors are illegal and carry a $100 fine if I'm not mistaken. You are usually safe up to 9 mph over the limit but you know as well as I do that depends on time of day, traffic and mostly the officers mood at the time.
I have no clue about animals so like F16e mentioned check online of wait until you get here. It will mostly have to with the people living around you. If no one complains you'll have no issues, if you end up with some little old lady living next across the street who thinks her business includes yours then you may have a problem. Can you tell I have one of those?
SeeYa when you get here.

Okay my turn, It has been some time since I have been fishing but, fishing permits are relatively cheap here. You can get them by the day, month or year. I suggest that you get one before you start fishing. If you get caught you will get a hefty ticket. Also make sure that you know the size limits on certian types of fish. And there are also seasonal limits too. As for the wolf hybrid, I know that you can have them in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. But be really careful there are lots of people around here that have issues with odd breeds. Like Roy's noisy little old lady accross the street. You are suppose to register you pets with the city you live in and obtain a city license. Notice I used the words suppose to. If you want a concealed permit you will have to go to a class with the state police. You can actually walk down the street in Virginia Beach with a gun in a holster showing and not be required to have a permit. I can promiss you that it will draw a lot of attention to you though and you will probably wish you didn't do it but it is legal.

One last thing on the concealed weapons permits, being in the military if you have a current weapons qaulification card you do not need to take the class for concealed weapons. Simply go to the local court house, pay your $50 and wait. It helps if you have been here for a couple months and have a Va. license so you can get an in-resident permit instead of a non-resident permit.

I believe you said you may be living in Hampton when you get here. Here's an excerpt from their animal code with the link to the whole code. You can also see the Hampton code for weapons Restrictions to dangerous dog findings. No canine crossbreed shall be found to be a dangerous dog or vicious dog solely because it is a particular breed of canine or canine crossbreed.http://www.municode.com/resources/gateway.asp?pid=10884&sid=46Shawn tried to pay his $50 bucks to walk around with one of these but it was a no go. WEAPONS guys - gotta love em
