My son's several month old Honda Fit was dropped off yesterday at Priority Honda for it's very first oil change and a tire rotation.  As he is heading back up Battlefield toward 64 the car starts smoking terribly and just doesn't have any power at all.  At first he thought it was a little spilled oil burning off and kept going until he could tell that the smoke was coming out of the tailpipe.

Turns out the guy doing the oil change did the oil change, got distracted by some shiny object, then came back to the car to add another 4.5 quarts of oil to the car.  Yep, it turns out if you drive a car with twice is much oil in the engine it is not twice as much lubrication....

They claim it is ready for us to pick it up...they drained the oil and cleaned everything up and refilled.  Said there was no damage to the engine in any way....we'll see.

I change the oil myself in all of my other cars, but since it is free at Priority I figured thats a good deal.  What a moron.

I hope the car will be ok TJ.  I had a less than mechanically inclined friend who tried to change the oil in a Tercel once.  He called me and said that his car wouldn't even turn over after he changed the oil so I went over to his house to investigate.  He drained the automatic transmission fluid and filled the engine with something like 14 quarts of oil!  It was so packed with oil it filled the cylinders up!  044  103

The car seems fine - they had to clean out the PVC system.  I don't know about you, but I have a habit of checking the dipstick after an oil change and before starting the car.  The oil level was about 9 inches past the full mark on the dipstick.

TJ, sorry to hear about your free oil change going all wrong. Was the technician reprimanded?

When I find myself being interupted while pouring a color, I can be the rudest SOB on the planet. It can be very hard to tell if you poured a tint into a mix after walking away for a minute or two. But doubling the amount of oil in a crank case and not checking the dipstick. Sounds like a "DIPSTICK" of a technician to me.

I sincerely hope that Priority made you happy afterall.

You are lucky the motor did not develop vapor lock.  I've met a few in my time (including my dad, but that's another story) that believe extra oil is OK.  IT'S NOT OK!!!!  Extra oil causes extra effort, as there is an increase in the internal engine components having to deal with oil slap.  Always keep the oil level between the max and fill marks.

Speaking of that, I'm not very fond of the stock oil dipstick with that honey-comb looking tip in my MCS.  I've been meaning to order a new aftermarket one for sometime, and I suggest anyone else interested to do the same.
