In our R56 MCS it says "Have the system checked immediately. Fasten the safety belts anyway." Sorry I could help anymore that that.

I am not sure if it is inline with the same issue on the 1st gen r53, but, when I had the issue, it had to do with the under-seat wiring harness. It would get stretched/bumped/jiggled, I dunno, but would throw the airbag light.
Had both wire harnesses replaced, free of charge as it was a MINI issued recall.
It can/could also be the seatbelt pre-tensioner.

I've got the same problem; CF wants $165.95 for the DIAGNOSTIC if you're out of warranty. There is a 10 yr/100,000 mile NHTSA required warranty but only if the problem is w/a few of the problems (there could easily be a dozen). You won't know until after the diagnostic if you have to pay or they send the bill to Mini.... They told me the diagnostic will take all day...

I know I'm just a dumb ol' body shop owner, but I find it hard to believe it takes all day to do a diagnosis. Maybe it does, but I doubt it. If it did, how much money would they make only charging 165?
How about calling autohaus, Atlantic Autowerks or Crown MINI for a second opinion?

The airbag light is on a separate bus from the rest of the computer, so it requires a separate diagnostic. I've seen the reset tool for sale for the R53s, but not the R56s. The light most likely came on because of a direct or indirect problem.
The light was on in my old '02 MCS when I bought it from my friend in July '05. I took it to the dealership (under warranty at the time). This problem was like the one TATTRAT mentioned. They had to keep it a week, as they completely changed out the wiring harness underneath the carpet/seats. Only time the light came on after that was when I had repairs done from an accident in '07. That was just a simple reset.
When my airbag light came on last spring in my '06 MCS, I took it to the dealership thinking it would just need to be reset, that perhaps a sensor had come loose. It turned out I had water in the battery box. The seal on it was bad, and it corroded the main breaker box next to the battery. This might explain why the dealership mentioned taking all day to do the diagnosis.
Not sure if you can get a better deal on the price with Auto Haus or Atlantic Autowerks, but it's worth a try.

I'll def call Crown Mini, I'm in NN, so it's not that far; but if the light (and the problem) is covered under the NHTSA mandated warranty (since I'm not under any other), Autohaus and A/A are not going to help, right? I'm sorta stuck between a rock and a hard place, might get a cheaper diagnostic at one of them but it could be free through Mini... argh.........
