No.....it's not original, but a wicked tuned A-series is good for about 130hp and a rebuild every 20,000 miles with barely streetable driveability. A forced induction non-race A-series is is good for 150-160ish if you want every day driveability and dependability. Now, a bone stock R1 motor makes about 160, has a 6 speed sequential gearbox and will last forever.
As for me, I am leaning towards an Eaton M45 on a street tuned 1340 giving me about 150. But if you want something different, a bike engine is the way to go in my opinion, a VTEC with the extended front just doesn't do it for me.

I'm with you on the VTEC. While it gives you buckets full of bullet proof power the extended nose just takes away from the car. Another aspect of this bike motor conversion is weight. While I have no idea what the difference in the whole package would be I do know that a 1275 heavy cast iron lump where the bike motor was built to be light. It was all three of us could do to get a 1275 in the back of the ambulance.

When reading this, keep in mind that I know next to nothing about classic Minis other than I want one. I can understand putting a Vtec engine in a classic because of reliability issues but... You have to extend the front of the car to make it fit? WTH? T.J. races his classic and if I'm not mistaken, he has a Mini engine in it still. What's wrong with having the correct engine in one? Are they that unreliable? If I ever get a classic, unless it's in mint condition and un-restored, I plan to race it and enjoy it for all it's worth. Is that frowned upon?

The A series engine is in no way unreliable IMHO. It is however an old antiquated design and does require periodic care and feeding unlike modern engines that are designed to go 100,000 miles with nothing but oil changes and air filter changes. To me the biggest reason people go for VTEC's in Mini's is not reliablility it is more HP and torque. With the light weight and good power the Mini VTEC's are quick little cars. Speaking of classics, I am lobbying the boss for permission to buy a Mk1 Mini shell that is rust free. It has had some body modifications - it was an ex racer car - so the fenders are cut for bigger tires and the inner fenders and firewall are modified, but it is a Mk1 shell with no rust. I am thinking of buying it, switiching over my front and rear sub frames and the driver's seat and having a new car. Since the shell has no VIN or title it would still be my old car - just with a different body shell. We'll see how this works out- not sure of the price or how much money I might be allowed to spend. In my house, I just make the money I don't decide where it goes once it goes into the bank.

The shell has a windshield, a plastic back window, no side windows what so ever, plastic boot lid and bonnet.
Needs about $1600 worth of new sheet metal to make it right, but as is it is ready to run in GP.

Leave it like it is and come racing. Put it on the big track.
BS Levy once said that racing a classic Mini is like wrestling a bear cub in a phone booth.

T.J., I agree with you that the A series is a great little motor! I love my growly little 1275 and plan on sticking with it, although a bit more pumped, in my current Mini. The only time your reliability becomes an issue is when you try and squeeze as much HP as possible out of it. That's why I plan on a supercharger since I can make it very quiet and reliable until I stomp on it and feed her the boost (guess it's forged for me)!
