 076 It really angers me that people in Jail have it better than those that appreciate their freedom. People that work hard for a living to support their families, who can't even afford cable tv, internet, and some elderly who can't even afford to run an air conditioner. I think they should have bare minimum. Besides the fact that our tax dollars are paying for it. GRRRRRRRR it really ticks me off. 076 sorry just had to put in my 2 cents.

I totally agree with you Sky.  Everything you stated has been running through my head.  I still go back and  reread the article because of my disbelief.  I'm certain my eyes and brain are playing tricks on me.  I can certainly come up with other ideas to handle the overcrowding problem without adding rewards for being there in the first place.  WOO HOO commit a crime in Newport News live tax free, workout, enjoy the sun, get an education, ....... WTF

Next will be silk sheets, free smoothies, zen gardens, massage therapists, gotta keep the tension down you know.  icon_evil
Oh yea and you get to pay for it  023  icon_evil

the next time someone refers to college dorms as prison-like ill be sure to refer them to that page and telling them that what they get at that facility we ALSO pay for along with our expensive tuition lol.

As much as you may not like it, modern society's goal for jail and prison is simply to keep the inmates off the streets and from committing subsequent crimes.  Because of the continued increase in laws and associated penalties, jails will continue to become more overcrowded unless lawmakers review and modify the current prison systems in place.

Remember, rights and privileges are earned in prison.  Inmates who break rules will get their rights taken away and put back in a solemn cell immediately.  While some of us want to see offenders thrown in the dungeons, some inmates do try to turn their life around and improve themselves.  We have to accept the fact that certain privileges are available in an attempt to rehabilitate these people.

Just ask yourself one question:  if you went to jail, wouldn't you want an opportunity to better yourself so you can better reintegrate into society once released?

The best way to get more of something is for the government to incentivize it.  Want more people to buy houses?  Offer a tax break on mortgage interest and offer interest rates to banks less than inflation.

Want to raise unemployment?  Offer longer and better benefits to the unemployed.

Maybe building better jails is a way to make sure they stay full?  If jails were nasty, terrible places maybe people would choose to avoid them. 

I am only being half serious with this so don't get too mad...I don't really think criminals commit crimes so they can go to jail and play video games, watch cable and sit in the air conditioning while I pay the bills.
