WAVY TV 10 News Story
Kurt Beach was a young rookie policeman in 1988 when he arrived ‘on the scene’ to find a 9-month old baby in crisis and in need of resuscitation.
In 1988, there were no required safety kits for emergency responders.
The baby was a Spina Bifida patient at home who had stopped breathing. Her tracheotomy tube was blocked. To clear her airways for CPR and to try to save her life, Kurt came into direct contact with blood and fluids.
Later, in 1995, Kurt learned that the baby he tried to save had Hepatitis C, which had resulted from some previous blood transfusions she had received.
In 1988, blood was not screened for Hepatitis C so the blood supply was not nearly as safe as it is today. Screening for the virus did not start until 1990-1992.
Today, Kurt is in desperate need of a living or deceased liver donor.
