Blessing at the Beach - Lt. Kurt Beach FundraiserNewschannel 3 is proud to announce a Taking Action partnership to help a local hero! Smithfield Lt. Kurt Beach contracted Hepatitis-C on the job 20-years-ago trying to save a baby's life. He now needs a new liver to survive. Lt. Beach was denied worker's compensation, because he missed a filing deadline. He missed the deadline, because he didn't know he was sick. Local Delegate William Barlow has introduced a bill to Virginia's General Assembly asking for compensation since the state didn't help Lt. Beach. The house and senate still need to pass the bill, but Cameron Swatelle didn't wait for the General Assembly's vote to start Getting Results.
Cameron has organized a two-day softball tournament in Virginia Beach for the weekend of March 21st. Newschannel 3, Knucklehead's Roadhouse and the local rock band "Chasing Corona" have teamed up with Cameron for what's being called "Blessing at the Beach." The 20-team tournament will take place on
March 21 and 22. A fundraiser wrap party will be held at Knucklehead's following the end of the tournament on the 22nd. The party will feature dinner and music by "Chasing Corona." Knucklehead's will donate 15% of their profits from the party to the Kurt Beach Medical fund and is also holding a live auction at the restaurant.
The goal is to raise $60,000 for the Kurt Beach Medical Fund. Every penny raised from the tournament, the dinner and the auction will go to the Beach family to help with medical expenses.
If you would like to enter your softball team in the tournament or would like to donate a gift certificate etc... to the live auction you can Cameron Sawtelle at 757-696-9680 or email him at
