Hey folks,
I'm thinking of painting my Jeep Cherokee.  I bought it new in 87 and it's almost as old as my kids so I want to keep it for awhile.  I want to have it repainted but my first estimate at Maaco Chesapeake was about $900 and thats not including some required prep work.  It's got some original decals that need to be removed and its got to be sanded.  The short story is that it will cost about $2,000 for the prep and paint and the Jeep is worth less than a $1000.  I heard we've got a Maaco person on the board as well.  Can anyone make a recomendation for a reasonable paint job.  I don't want it to rust.
thanks,
Marty 077

Maacodale, Dale, here on the forum owns the Macco in the Hampton/Newport News area.  I'm sure he'll chime in here soon.  045

Don't forget there's also MD IN UK.  Maybe you can get a bidding war going over the jeep and get a really good deal.

The next time you see a road crew laying tar get them to spred some on your jeep OR house paint and a wagner spray gun OR boat paint and a roller.

Like most things in life you get what you pay for. If you want cheap go to Earl Schieb, if you want quality go to John or Dale on this site.

Without actually seeing your vehicle, it's hard to say what it could cost. The figures you show don't seem very far off in either direction (Dale or Me)

I always suggest you ask yourself what the car is worth to you and how much longer do you expect to keep it..I just finished a job on a 79 Nissan 280ZX. My customer gladly spent $4500 on a car that may never be valued that high. She loves the car and wants to keep it for years and years to come. So, IMHO, she did well. The finish will last probably as many as 15 years if it's maintained properly.

It's more about what you want, and nevermind all the other opinions out there. It is afterall, your money.

If you have the time and the inclination, sign up for an autobody class like those offered at Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology.  Paint your Jeep yourself.  It won't look as good as a professional paint job, but will cost a lot less $.  A lot more time and effort, but less money.

If that doesn't appeal to you and you aren't too worried about a perfect finish, let someone in one of those classes paint your car for you - there are people who will do it for the cost of materials - maybe a little for their time.

you do get what you pay for though - and from my own experieince I can tell you that a DIY paint job is not anything close to a real professional job.

Just coat the whole thing in a Rhino liner.  It will have that rugged look and will never rust.   023

OK, you don't wax Rhino Liner.   017  The idea is "having" the rugged look.   104
