Hello, all!
My name is Dez and I am a 24 year old full time pediatric nurse who just purchased her first MINI this past Saturday June 6th. I have been living in the Denbigh area of Newport News for about two months. There is a well loved MINI Clubman in a driveway I pass through my neighborhood every morning, and I spotted an Indy blue with rally lights the other day on my way home in the rain.
My 1996 Monte Carlo's transmission finally died two weeks ago and I was in need of a new car. I shopped everywhere for a MINI and found one through Checkered Flag this weekend.
Her name is Penelope (which will soon be on her license plate) and she is a Hyper Blue 2006 Mini Cooper S. I got a great deal on her, and now that she sits in my driveway I have done nothing but wash her as well as plan on what to get her for Christmas. (A new bonnet grill, racing stripes, rally lights, BBS wheels, etc. etc.) Her first grill badges are coming in the mail some time this week.
I am more familiar with the "night scene" cars in the area, and some of the people in those circles are sorta undesirable. It is nice to see some responsible drivers who love their cars, unlike some of the people I have met with Civics held together with duct tape...
MINIs are so great, and I am so happy to finally have one. I am looking forward to participating in Autocross next year after I tune Miss Penelope. Hope to see you out on the street. I'm super friendly, don't be afraid to wave!

Welcome aboard, Dez. I live in the Denbigh area, too. I work at Ft. Eustis and drive back and forth to Courthouse Green behind K-Mart. There are a couple of other Minis on the base, a yellow S and a red S convertible, that you may also see around here.
Interesting about the Monte... I have an old '86 SS that I'm considering selling. It's a kind-of faded candy apple red. I do the car hangout thing, too, though I have not been out much lately. I called a buddy up about two weeks ago, and they said they can meet again at Bass Pro in Hampton so long as nothing stupid happens. I usually head out that way around 9 p.m. I ran into alot of my old buds. Everyone like came out of the woodwork.

Hey Dez,
Boy you don't know what you're in for. On the major UP side, there is no one I"ve met yet that even resembles some of the "ricer" mentality. At I've been to MINI events from Georga, to Boston to Chicago. We're a far more mature group. Not "grown up" mind you, just FAR more respectable. I've been in the car scene locally for 30 years, and MINI folks are by far the greatest. Now for the DOWN side. I don't think there are more than a handful of us that would qualify as sane! I mean we name our cars for Christ's sake! I personally have driven hours on end, just to drive more hours with a buncha other MINI owners. And don't bother asking advice on what to buy for your MINI. This group will help empty your bank account faster than a crack dealer!
Having said that, WELCOME, you'll love your MINI & MINI owners!

Aw, shweet! Thanks for the welcomes, you guys are so friendly! Horrah for people working at Ft. Eustis, Jack, I'll definitely see you around. I am glad to hear they are doing the Bass Pro thing again. I was wondering about that. I think that was the best local all-car weekend meet I had ever participated in. ^___^ I'll be sure to drag Penelope out there to visit her MINI brethren.

Haven't met you or Penelope as of yet. Welcome to the group and I hope to meet up with you at one of our get togethers some day very soon.
