Anybody have any ideas on dates, locations, drives, etc?

It would be nice to get reservations locked down asap. I've never done a FCR, so I'll defer to those of you with more experience. Does anyone in particular head this up or is it done by committee?

Dale,

I have done a good bit of the planning for the first two years, and Wendy mainly headed up last year.  Typically I think it's best to find some sort of central hotel that's fairly inexpensive, but not too low rent, somewhere around or just under $100 per night, with easy access to the fun back roads.  Things get really good going into West Virginia, and it's pretty easy to find a place to grab lunch when we're on the road.  2 years ago we logged 300 miles of backroads driving on Saturday ALONE!!

Things are too much in the air for me to participate in planning this year, as I don't even know if I'll be in the state if this job hunt works out.  (I'm trying to get a job out in Vegas.)  I'm more than happy to help in any way you need though, just give me a ring anytime.

Darn sure might take ya up on that Ben! Thanks.

But since you're not currently a MINI owner I feel funny asking advice, so I tell ya what, Make just one payment on the Clubman and I'll let you lay out the routes! 044

Last year all I did was a lot of goggling and processes of elimination.

1.  I thought of pet friendly hotels in VA.
2.  Areas with scenic roads
3.  Times of peak foilage in VA using this link:

http://www.virginia.org/Fall/

I'm thinking maybe October 17th -18th or 24th - 25th depending on areas peak performance.  Early Nov we seem to be just missing the colors, but has still been beautiful with great company : )

The trip that Ben did was GREAT.  Wouldn't mind repeating that, but trips with the gang are based on school and band/football schedules deciding if we can join in.  icon_razz

What can I do to help with the planning?  I have a free hand.

I would prefer to have a pet friendly hotel and bring my pal along if possible.

I am thinking hotels might be hard to find during peak weekends and we might want to get those locked in now.  Do we have a route planned and area to end for the night.  I could start looking up hotels.

Remember, I've never done a Fall Colors Run, but how about one hotel central enough to do a run up north one day and out west another. Maybe The Waynesboro or Staunton areas?

I'm searching now for pet friendly hotels all along the Shenandoah Valley now

These links helped a lot with peak times for areas:

http://www.dof.virginia.gov/fall/index.shtml

Here's a Highland Driving tour route:

Pet friendly Hotels in Staunton, Va:

Judging by a quick glance here it looks like the 1st weekend in November was pretty at Staunton River State Park:

Dale, I just came across this link in our site from years gone by.  Might give some ideas to help the planning process.

WARNING READERS THIS LINK IS NOT OUR CURRENT TRIP.

Who would be interested in T Shirts for the FCR?

If nothing else, i think it's a good investment on future events when you wear a shirt to a MINI event, people always ask about the event shirt you're wearing. That's what got me interested in the Tar Heel's Blue Ridge Parkway run.

Depending on the route y'all take I/we might meet you somewhere and tag along for a portion of the drive ;)

And I'd be interested in a shirt!

BTW if you're doing Skyline Drive you might consider mid-late October for a run, for fall foliage. You can get a 'leaf report' emailed to you, link is on the top right of this page:

How does everyone feel about doing the same hotel for Friday and Saturday? If it's centrally located we can do a northern run on Saturday and a Southern run on Sunday. Or vice versa. I'm thinking un packing one instead of twice may help. But that isn't the biggest reason. I've found a very nice looking (even though I heard about the Afton Inn...) Bed and Breakfast. However, they cater to weekend guests and aren't interested in doing us for one night. I totally understand that though.

So what do y'all think? Are ya up for a central location for both days or do we still want to change hotels Friday and Saturday nights?

We like the idea of staying in one Hotel and doing the north/south runs. And put us in for 2 T-shirts as well.

I would like the hotels either way.  Either as a home base or on the move, doesn't matter to me.
