Wow !  I was just watching a broadcast of the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction on Speed and they just sold a '62 Austin Mini Jolly.
Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I have never even heard of a "Jolly". It looked a lot like a Moke. It had 809 actual miles on it and sold for $49,000  103  119  101  Anyone know just how rare this Mini model might be ?  Numbers built ? ect.  Am amazed at the sale price but can't help wondering. What kind of person would keep a car like that for 47 years and only drive it for under 1000 miles  102 102 I just don't get it  !

Pick up an issue of Classic Cars & Parts. Turn the pages, and be amazed at how many cars are in fact out there with the same stats. Low Mileage, one owner, sat in the garage for 40+ years. It baffles the mind when you see the price tags too.

I always believe that it's better to use it frequently then hardly at all. When a vehicle sits that long with so little use, that's about all it's good for. Taking it from a sit still for 40 years status and making it a weekend only car is kind of like asking your retired grandfather to get up and play nine innings of softball on a 90 degree summer afternoon. Theres bound to be problems.....

As far as a Jolly goes, I've done a lotta Classic Mini research and I can't recall seeing one in the past 4 years  102

That car was sold a while ago...http://www.minimania.com/web/startreturn/1/MaxReturn/20/StartPage/1/threadid/96560/msgthread.cfm...here is a thread that discusses it from January.  Interesting read.  As usual for a Barret Jackson car they don't really get the facts straight and some chump spends a lot more dough for something he doesn't really know all the facts about.

I knew at the time that I was watching this show that it was a rebroadcast of a sale that went on a while ago. Speed Channel usually broadcast the event from West World live over 3 days and even though I'd like to see it all "live", I just don't have the time. I do try to catch the re runs whenever I can. I must have missed this car on the block on the real sale date, but was very interested in the Mini model and the sale price REALLY peaked my interest. Thanks for the link. I will be sure to check it out !

All Barrett Jackson is good for is inflating the market and making it harder to get real prices when shopping for classics.  I remember when they sold the Mini used in the new Italian Job, a 90's model Rover Mini Cooper (not even a sportspack) as a 60's model original Cooper S for some ungodly amount of money.  Highway robbery IMO and prices of classics jumped about 1-2K overnight.

Thanks to all for the feedback on this issue. It's exactly what I was hoping for.....Opinions from classic owners and fans  038  As I have said, I really know very little in depth detail about the history and models of the Classic Mini's, but do WANT to know all that I can !  I feel that every day is a successful day if I learn at least one new thing  038

UPDATE:

Yes, I have seen this car before. I believe the low mileage and the fact that only three Minis were cut up to look like this is what may have factored into it's rather high sale price.

I think I'm correct when I say "cut up Mini". Theres really nothing special about the car. It is merely a highly (body only) modified Classic mini. The Jolly name just did not register in my brain when I first read this post. It looks a bit like something that you might have seen on "Fantasy Island".

Hey Dale, lets buy up a few Classics, mod 'em out like this one, and see if we can fetch 50K apiece. Woo Hoo!!!!

Sure it's the same car ?  After searching some auction sites and looking at the link that TJ sent along, this HIGH DOLLAR Jolly MAY not be the same car. One that was sold a while ago was listed as a '60 and the one I am refering to was listed as a '62 and one of only three ordered during that model year. They are the same color, and in looking closely it looks like the '62  has more clearance between the top of the tires and the fender wells. Could be just a spring/suspension change, or larger tire diameters, or maybe more likely I'm imagining it .  120  Either way it seems to be a rare model to be here in the states, and I believe the ones that were shipped here were called "Beach Cars"  Sounds reasonable.  Thanks to everyone that responded to my origional post !  I was courious  by both the model, that I had never heard of, and the increadible amount of money that it brought at auction. I know a lot more now, I think  017 017

Dave, welcome to the world of Classic Mini Madness. The first thing about these little buggers I think you'll find to be most challenging, "What year is it?"

As the Magician Chris Angel asks his audience at the start of every show, "Are You Ready?" This can be a long ride my friend.

Thanks for the input and I am beginning to understand the troubles with positivily identifying just what you are looking at when looking at any Classic Mini, and especially when thinking about purchasing one. I know a guy that has a Morris Minor
Pickup in his back yard that was a started frame off restoration about 20 years ago. And yes to the best of my knowledge the trucks were built on a frame, and I am thinking about pushing him a bit to see if he will sell it. He has had plans for it, but hasn't touched it in years and now has a wife and children that he didn't have to consider years ago. Maybe I can get it
without breaking my very small bank account.  017 Will keep you informed and thanks again. I probably have too many irons in the fire to be honest 119  I have an '04 "S"  engine in the basement here that I am still in the process of tearing down, and am planning on rebuilding the rear end on my 4x4 hunting truck this weekend. The truck has to be the first priority at the moment as the deer hunting season is only a couple of weeks away and my Mini is just too small to haul all of my hunting gear in !  Am thinking about seriously hot rodding up the spare engine !  Am thinking about doing an Alta Twurbo motor set up with it. I have found the kit online from the West coast at a reasonable price and have seen youtube video's of like systems on a dyno that have made up to 383 HP at the wheels  038  Imagine this.. an old Morris Minor
truck that has an R53 engine in it that makes 300 + HP.  I LIKE IT !!!!    Sick, yes. Undriveable, yes. Fun, YES !!!!!! 038
