I just got home from the emergency vet on Independence Blvd.  This morning at around 5:40 as I called Newbie from his rug in front of the dishwasher for breakfast, he apparently got his right rear leg caught under the edge of the dishwasher and something sharp under there cut his leg and severed the Achilles tendon as clean as a knife wound.  103  Newbie is at the emergency vet center waiting for surgery to repair his leg to the tune of approximately $2500.   We need a fainting emoticon...  I'd do anything to save my little buddy's life, limb or whatever but I really didn't need the expense of this right now.  Everyone please say a little prayer that Newbie's surgery goes well and that he heals up fast.  I need to head to work...  I'll be back on later this afternoon.

Poor Newbie and you  009!  That is an excellent hospital; I know from first hand experience.  They will take care of your little buddy.

OMGosh, so sorry to read about this.  icon_cry  Will he be back to 100% after the surgery?  I sure hope so.  In the mean time check the underneath of that dish washer out and be sure one of his toys didn't make it's way under there.  Upon his return home he'll surely be seaching it out again.

** Update **

The surgeon called me this afternoon and said that Newbie did very well in surgery.  He should regain full use of his leg but it is going to be 8 weeks of trying to keep a very energetic dog calm and off of his leg as much as possible.  He will be in a walking cast for 3 to 4 weeks and then in a splint for another 2 to 4 weeks.  107

Thank you all for the kind words and well wishes.  I'm sure that with all of the positive energy heading his way he will heal fast!  045  I just don't know about me...

Glad to here Newbie came out OK on the other side.  I have a friend who just had his kidney removed due to cancer, so it's a full week for prayers.  His surgery took longer than planned, but I have been informed he's doing well, too.   038

I'm sure you thought of this, but maybe now would be a good time to just do a once-over around the house and make sure there are no other sharp edges on semi-hidden objects.

I know what your going through Jeff.  I had to take Sadie to the E-vet last year for what turn out to be pinched nerve in her neck that was leaving her paralyze. Well 45 hundred bucks later, she's doing great now. You'll have to give Newbie some tranquilizer's to slow him down. 103

Great news Jeff  038 Keeping him calmed down might be a problem for a few days, buut I'll bet you will be amazed at how fast he will adjust to the hardware on his leg. Now that Newbie is on the mend, what can we do to heal Jeff 102

Dang Newbie! Chill out pup!

Jeff, time for some doggy downers to keep him cool. Good luck with that too, by the way. Hopefully he'll be fine. I'm sure he will be. Take care of the lil guy and keep us informed.

Thanks Steve, Dave and Dale.  I don't know about fixing me, Dave.  I'm beginning to think that I'm beyond repair.  107

Newbie is doing as well as can be expected.  Keeping him from running, playing and walking on BOTH hind legs is a trick though.  He's currently on a liquid antibiotic that he does NOT like one. damn. bit., a pill style antibiotic, a pill type tranquilizer, a pain pill and one other thing that I can't think of.  He has to wear an E-collar and most of his lower right side has been shaved.  He still loves to cuddle though.  003

His surgeon, bless his innocent, animal-loving heart, all but threatened to whip my ass if I didn't keep him calm and off of that leg for the next 3-4 weeks while the cast is on it.  For what it's worth, Dr Stallings (sp?) is a great, very caring  045 and VERY well-paid surgeon.   icon_rolleyes

Newbie charmed the hell out of the entire staff at Tidewater Animal Emergency & Referral Center on Independence Blvd.  When they called to tell me that I could pick him up that afternoon, the nurse commented on how sweet and hyper he was.  I reminded her that she was seeing the sedated Newbie, not the real Newbie.  You could almost hear her jaw hit the desk/floor through the phone.  045

Jeffy?  Do you mean my son?  He's preparing for his big move to Kansas...   091   If you meant me, I'm fine.  I could run the big crane over at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding with my blood pressure, but I'm fine...  *twitch*  107

Glad to hear things are turning out as well as can be expected and that Newbie is looking good for a full recovery.  Our last dog had to have major surgery for some broken leg bones.  After several thou and a week long stay at the NCSU Vet School, he came home with pins, plates, and screws in him and several months of rehab.  Never regained full use.  But enough for him to live a full and happy life.  At the time, it was really stressful dealing with it.  But it was worth it.

My biggest battle right now is keeping Newbie calm.  Even the tranquilizers barely take the edge off of his enthusiasm for pretty much anything from food to a speck of dust floating through the air.  The Dr told me to keep him OFF of that leg.  The little brat has jumped up into and out of chairs and the sofa before I can react to stop him!  I'm thinking of calling the Dr to see if I can increase his tranquilizer from 1/4 pill to 1/2 pill.  Or 3 whole pills.  Or something...  102

Newbie will be OK. Trust me, if jumping onto the funiture or chasing a speck of dust was hurting his injury/surgery site, he wouldn't be doing it. Other than locking the little guy away in a small kennel, there is no way you can keep that breed of dog completely calm all of the time,( except for heavily sedating him).  Better to let him do what he can, and keep the doggie downers to a minimum in my opinion.  Hoping for the best for the cute little fellow !  Jeff, just don't attempt to sedate yourself by stealing some of the doggie downers for yourself  018
