I've only been on the interstate before the snows, but hear that they are cluttered with DEEP pot holes. I've noticed some pretty deep ones around town. I've caught a few local news stories concerning it as well. I'm thinking of parking the MINI for awhile and driving the F150 truck. I almost visited Never Never Land a few weeks ago on the interstate heading to Norfolk. If I would've went into that one I'm sure I'd have been dug out from the point of no return without major damage. Pot holes have always been an issue in this area because of the lousy job the contractors do when repairing them to begin with. Yeah, I've heard the contractors excuses and I still know better along with most of the drivers on the roads. Now since the snows and plows have made many of the existing ones worst and created new ones it's like driving thru a war zone at times. I'm thinking I need to introduce VDOT contractors to some of the crafting products I've used through the years. I bet I can do it a heck of a lot cheaper than they do as well. Too bad I'm not in the back pocket of someone making these type decisions.

I won't even begin to open this can of worms... Right now, the pot holes are increasing with whatever moisture manages to get between the cracks (whether the cracks are man-made or are from stress). Yes, expansion/contraction are an issue with freezing/melting water. Minis can ride just as rough as many other sports cars, to include Corvettes, Camaros, and Mustangs. One alternative that has a proven cost/effectiveness ratio is using rubber in the asphalt. This idea has been around for several years. The lifespan of asphalt would extend to fifteen years or more. Rubberized asphalt is also more durable for such things as potholes. Unfortunately, the road paving companies/industries shoot this proposed idea down all the time because they complain it will put them out of jobs. Now, with as much as we all know about just the roads around here, these guys would never, NEVER be out of a job. I cannot begin to tell you how many secondary roads get neglected because of a lack of funding (or whatever reason they come up with). And we all know it's only going to get worse as they continue to cut new roads.

Dale, your video reminds me of the tank trails we used to travel on in Germany during the "Cold War". Of course, riding in a 110 MM self propelled Howitzer makes all the diffrence in the world.

That will sure happen. Tyler's yellow MINI has lost two tires with bulges on the side walls from the roads up north. that's when we decided to ditch the run flats. Two $200 tires were enough!

Definitely have to say that there is one benefit to driving the Cavalier back and forth to work... Huge sidewalls. They absorb a lot of the potholes. 14" rims, but the over all outer diameter is taller than that of the MINI. LOL. And the tires are cheap if I do screw one up!

Thinking hard about send the yellow MINI back north with Tyler with the stock 16 inchers on for those roads!

Another one bites the dust ? I HOPE NOT ! Last Fri. morning on my way to work, I found the pot hole from hell. I-664 just getting onto the flyover ramp heading onto I-64 West. This hole/crater was not there the day before, so I was not prepared for it and had no time to avoid hitting it. The hit was so HARD that all of my passenger side airbags deployed and the car shut off. SCARED the HELL out of me ! Coasted to the side of the road and the car did restart after about 5 min. "Target" is currently at the Flag for repairs with an estimate of over $2300.00 for repairs. Seat cover, head liner, "A" piller trim piece, 3 airbags, ect. ect. need to be replaced. No apparent damage to wheels or tires, but the suspension components ??? I expect the bill to grow very soon. My insurance company say's they will have to investigate the incident as in their opinion the airbags should not have deployed. They are possibily looking to claim that it was a manufacturers defect . GRRR !! Only the side bags went off. The folks at the Flag said it wasn't all that unusual, but must have been a heavy impact. It was ! Seems that the side impact airbag sensor is mounted very low and just behind the doors. Possibily a chunk of road may have flown up and struck the car from below at that sensor point and set off the bags. Am currently driving a Toyota Matrix "S" as a loaner. "Fire Engine" Red in color. Just a bit better than a Camrey that I told them I would not accept ! It's OK, but I REALLY miss my car already My lovely little Mini has surely earned it's name. I only hope the damage this time isn't so bad that I will have to give up on it and let it go. I sure hope not, because I seem to be very in tune with this Mini. Getting a bit older, but still wants to run like hell, and also accident prone and in need or repair on a regular basis. I had to travel that way again that same evening in the loaner, and the hole/crater had been filled with asphalt only hours after I had trashed my car in it. Am guessing that there were many vehicles that had issues with that crater that day, for it to have been patched so quickly. Noticed this morning that the asphalt patch is sinking since Friday, so I'm guessing that the earth below the roadway is giving away. BEWARE !!!

Gee Dang! Glad nothing else happened. Granted, that was enough. Ain't it loud when air bags deploy?! I would try to get an alignment done at a minimum.
One thing that worries me about what your insurance company said. If they decide it isn't a covered incident and they go with the manufacturers defect, that might leave you holding the bag. I would think it might be had getting BMW/MINI to admit it's a flaw. That might be bad for your case. Good luck!

Scared the hell out of me when the bags deployed. Wasn't expecting it, and am just happy that the steering wheel bag did not go off ! A complete 4 wheel alignment is included in the estimate that I got from the Flag. I expect/hope that that will show if there is any damage to any suspension components. If the Insu. company can claim, and make it stick that the bag deployment was a Manuf. defect, I WILL be stuck with all the repair costs, plus the costs of their investigation According to the folks at the Flag, I shouldn't worry, as they have dealt with this issue before. Hoping that they know what they are talking about !!!!!

Dave, glad to hear you are OK. Go back and take lots of pictures at the scene if possible. I would also see about getting a pothole repair report from VDOT, as well as a copy of the accident report from the state police. This is why I hate the roads around here. Defect my a--. Granted, you said the pothole was not there the day before. Maybe I should go buy a Sherman tank and drive down the road in that.
