A collision with a pothole is a legitimate insurance claim - years ago I hit a submerged pothole going 10 miles an hour and destroyed two wheels and tires on my VW - I was grateful that the tow truck driver told me to make the claim. Good luck on the repairs.

All is going as expected. SLOW. CF reports that all the parts should be in tomorrow and estimate a 2 day repair. Doubt I'll see the car agin until early next week. They also report that they have straightened out the insurance co. That's good to hear.

For piece of mind, I would contact the claims department with your insurance to make sure everything is clear.

I definitely second the report from VDOT. If nothing else, at least they could probably need to get a report that it exists

Am working through the VDOT process now, trying to file a claim for damages. Yes, there is a way to do it. VDOT has contractors that are responsible to maintain roads in certain area's, and the contractor can be liable for damage if the pothole hasn't been repaired within a fixed amount of time once they have recieved a report of it. "My" pothole was repaired the same day that I had my run in with it, so I may be out of luck, but it's worth a shot. BTW, this hole is getting deeper every day, even after they patched it last Friday.

Update on my pothole/sink hole, damage to "Target", for anyone that's interested. I picked up "Target" from the Checkered Flag Toyota, body shop this past Monday afternoon, 3/22/2010. Their 2 day repair estimate, after the parts were delivered, turned into 2 weeks. They had a lot of work to do, but all was interior work related to the airbags deployment. Have a new headliner, interior A piller, and other such parts replaced , plus a 4 wheel alighnment .(SP.? The work that they did was good, but I have a problem with the passenger side sun visor at this time. The drivers side airbags deployed only, but the passenger side sun visor is way out of position and appears that the metal shaft is bent. That damage was done at the deaership while trying to repair the other issues and replaceing the headliner. They have offered to ship me a replacement sun visor, and I will be installing the new part myself, once I recieve it. Total damage.....$2476.50 Have had no luck with filing a claim for damages with the VDOT contractor that is responsible for maintaining the local interstate road ways :-) Seems that no one has EVER won a damage claim from this company, and I will NOT be the one to break the ice regarding any such roadside damage !! Maybe we can offer them a "pay back". Get us their number and we'll hit every mile of Interstates in the area reporting pot holes. Can you see them getting tons of calls for pot hole repairs? That would be too funny!

A two day repair turning into two weeks. I think Dale will back me up on this one. Most Insurance companies will automaticaly give two to three days right from the start for writing the repair order (estimate), ordering parts, etc. Once the fine details are all ironed out, and a proper repair laid out, then the real time needed can actually be figured for the repair. Such as 14 hours of labor/paint devided by 5 equals 2.8 or 3 days to repair and complete for return to customer. I think it's probably safe to say, that a very large percentage of the population is not fully aware of this formula. It's used all the time in the industry to figure how long you might need a rental car for instance. I can't tell you how many times someone (a customer) will see eight hours of labor and think there car should be done the same day. Well, that's my .02 cents on that subject. I hope your MINI is happy again and home where it belongs, and good luck with that claim. I'm waiting for the final result too. This could be very interesting.

Dave, you can always contact your local congressman if you really want to pursue reimbursement from VDOT. Can't be any worse than the millions lost in the I-64 Mercury Boulevard project area.

John is correct. It's amazing how many times customers think we can fix a 5 hour dent and paint a fender in the same day. Heck, even some idiot insurance companies think that! Most will allow 5 to 6 hours/per day of work per vehicle. On occasion if an insurance company figures an hour to Remove and paint a bumper with a total of 3 or 4 hours of labor, they want it done in a day. Unfortunately, these mental midgets have never done body or paint work and don't understand that paint has to be 100% dry before it can be handled and installed.
As for time delay's, I really don't understand that. We don't get paid until the cars leaves, so why delay? At a dealership they have money coming from parts, sales, service and body. As for John and I, we only have income when we deliver a car. Trust me, no one wants a car back to a customer than an independent shop owner! But I can't tell you how many times we hav eone close to being finished and find out we need some stupid little clip or something that was totally unforeseen!

VDOT's contractor is TME Enterprises, located in Chesapeake. 757-466-8717. Potholes or other road hazards can be also be reported at http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/citizen.asp As I have stated before, NO ONE has EVER won a damage claim against this company, and I will NOT be the one to break this unbelievable perfect record. VDOT pays this company $6,407,544 per year to maintain the area roads, and I for one do NOT believe we are getting a good return for that investment !!!
