So I was getting on the interstate tonight and noticed a significant loss of power in my MINI. Suddenly I saw and heard the RPMs go through the roof and the car started slowing down. I tried to shift gears and heard a pop...... 093. apparently The clutch just "went". I had it towed to CF and left them a message. Has anyone else had this happen? I'll post more after I talk to them tomorrow.

I'll be interested to find out if this is a clutch failure OR another dual mass flywheel failure.

So they gave me a nice JCW clubman as a loaner and Frank seems to thin something broke loose in the clutch. He's suppose to call me later with details.

Yes it's a red and black clubby. It's nice but the brakes are squealing and the clutch in it is pretty soft. lol 017

Frank just called me to authorize them dropping the transmission to look at the clutch. He told me that they will probably cover it and that he thinks its probably that something came loose. He said that they could smell burnt clutch. I said NO joke!!. He gave me some story about how that when teenagers burn the clutch up cause they don't know how to drive. I explained that there are NO teenagers at my house and anyone that drives that car besides me is indeed an adult. He told me that I didn't seem like the kinda guy that races my car and I cut through the BS with a "I have been driving manual transmissions since I was about 11". Anyways the word so far is that if they weasel their way out of this then it will at least be $1700. We shall see what bull kaka they come up with. I have put 30000 miles on it and most of them have been highway.

Hmm... you would be crazy enough, dale.   118

...

Forrest, my best advice at this moment is to go over to the NAM board and search for "burnt clutch."  There's a ton of threads on the topic, with various comments about what should be covered at what mileage for whatever reason.

You know the more I think about yesterdays conversation the more mad I get. There was a comment made to me that even if I burnt up the clutch that "someone" may still cover the cost. First off when you burn up a clutch you can usually tell by the slipping it does before it goes out. I never experienced that in this case....it just went. I hate someone telling me that they might "Do me a favor" by fixing this when I didn't break it. If I had then it wouldn't be bothering me...I'd be thankful. I have been looking at the NAM forums and it appears I'm not the only one that has had this problem with the clutch. I do the best I can to take care of my cars and I don't think I have ever owned a car thats clutch has gone out this early in its life. I will not be a happy camper if I get stuck with this bill. Just needed to rant guys.

Hey, man.  The rant is understood.  The other guys who have commented on NAM are just as frustrated as you are.  I could have sworn a couple of cases mention they fragged their clutch without any previous indication.

I'm sure Frank and the guys will come up with the right answer. But for those out of warranty, I'd maybe see what Terry and the guys at Atlantic Autowerks have ran into. But to me, I'd think this would have to be a classic parts failure. I mean Forrest hasn't even made any of our runs and we drive conservatively compared to our Tar Heel brethren. Having a clutch just fail seems odd. Especially with no prior signs of slippage.

That's the problem, Dale.  Many dealerships are saying it's NOT under warranty for one reason or another.  A clutch is one of those "mystery" warranty parts.  If you don't believe me, just go search NAM.  There's all kinds of complaints about clutches not being covered with <50K miles.
