The Openometer! The Openometer is a tool to help keep you aware of your openness. It tracks your open-top motoring time down to the minute, so you can revel in the roofless hours you've spent on your trip, cultivating your open-mind and a tan.
Buyers of BMW’s latest second-generation MINI convertible will have yet another unusual offering to tick on the options list, in the shape of the Openometer. A new pod sitting next to the rev counter, it records how much time the car is driven with the top down.

Most modern convertibles with electric tops make you genuflect towards Ralph Nader while jumping through flaming hoops to let the sun shine in. You know the drill, an intricate button dance that makes you think you’re firing a cruise missile from a B-2 bomber: Stop. Put car in park. Engage e-brake. Depress button. Wait. Depress button again. Release e-brake. Put car in gear. Proceed with your life.
Mini decided that’s not fun, so it decided to let you lower, or raise, the top while you’re on the move – provided you aren’t doing more than 20 mph. It had to put some sort of governor on it, right? Imagine if you hit “open” on the freeway? Anyway, it’s pretty flash for a German outfit. And we can understand where it might be handy. You can be backing out of the driveway while lowering the lid on your Mini. Sure, that could be kind of efficient… but you know where this is going to lead, right?
Showboating, that’s where.

The R57: Seriously Always Open MINI will be taking the “Always Open” slogan to new levels with the 2009 MINI Convertible. As part of the advertising strategy, MINI is developing a gauge in the car that will tell you the percentage of time you’ve had the roof down. The hope is that it will encourage owners to live the “open” lifestyle even further. Expect this gauge to be placed somewhere near the tachometer.
We’ve also learned that MINI will be leaving the top design essentially unchanged with one notable exception. Based on recent insider information (and backed-up by spy photos), MINI will be doing away with the roll-hoops seen in the R52. Instead we can expect a pop-up system similar to the one found on the BMW 3 Series convertible. Replacing the roll-hoops in favor of a pop-up system would go a long way in making the word “open” a bit more meaningful.

With my last convertible my husband used to tease me and say "Initiating top down procedure" or top up procedure. It really was picky or there could be issues. I have a gen 1 so I do have to be stopped to operate the top but it's still pretty easy. I saw a thing you can buy that will allow one button operation of the top, I'm thinking of buying it.
