I'm coming out of lurk mode for a vent, and a PSA for other '09 convertible owners:

After some intermittent rattles in my '09 convertible I got tired enough last week to do some more in depth checking.  I realized that there is a gap between the soft top & weather stripping on the rear passenger side.  After much struggle with work schedules (I work 12hr shifts!!) I managed to get Phlppr into Checkered Flag today.

Imagine my surprise when Frank called to inform me that yes, there is indeed a gap in the soft top at the weather strip, and it's a KNOWN problem in '09 convertibles!  Apparently they have only recently(?) discovered a broken plastic bracket that allows the soft top to gap and are working on creating a fix kit for it.  In the meantime, yes, it could leak down into the boot when it rains :(

I'm on the list for the fix when it is finally available.  You can bet I'll be on the phone every week to Frank.  I also had Frank repeat to me 3 TIMES that any damage from leakage would also be a covered repair!!

I'm a little frustrated with myself for not getting more detective sooner, tho I'm not sure what good it would have done.  And no, a garage isn't an option for storage, especially when I'm working 12hr shifts.  I'm hoping that there is minimal, if any damage, from leaking and that Frank/CF doesn't fail me on repairing that when the time comes.

You would think that the least they could do is offer the free use of a waterproof Mini car cover until the repair is available 091

Until you can get your MINI in for service, cover the affected area with a plastic bag, then use some of that adhesiveless tape.  It's blue in color and is used to do carpentry work.  Someone should be able to help you find it at a Lowe's or Home Depot.

Just a thought, maybe check with Crown and see is they have any experience with that problem.

Careful with the tape, it could leave residue on the top.

Thanks for the PSA!!! I have the broken plastic bracket too, but have luckily (knock on wood) not had any leakage down into the boot. I recently had my MINI in for a broken piece of the trim on the top and wondering if I should be surprised that this broken plastic bracket and known problem was not mentioned to me by Frank???

From the way he spoke this is something that has only recently come up.  He didn't really give a time frame but did indicate that he had a very short list of owners to notify when the fix becomes available.  I would call him and mention that you read about it HERE and get your name on the list also!

I double-checked with my brother.  It's called painter's tape and is not supposed to leave a residue.

Back out of lurk mode to let y'all know that Phlppr had her top repaired today!  I am now of the opinion that there is no "formal" recall on this.  Just a known issue and "oh, yeah, there's a fix if you've got the problem".

I do have to say, tho, that I was very impressed with the way CF handled it all today.  Originally they said it would take a couple days.  So I dropped off early this morning, picked up the loaner (you know... I'm so regretting not buying an "S" to begin with...).  got the call from Frank about 2 that Phlppr was all fixed up and ready to come home!!!  Pleasantly surprised (even if I didn't get a chance to really give that Grey "S" a good work out).

So, if you think you have a broken bracket on the interior of your '09 soft top... there is now a fix available for it.
