My neighbors daughter is traveling in upper New England and just phoned home to say that she had a warning light come on which looks like a steering wheel with a padlock on it. This is on an '07 Cooper automatic. I've done some searching but I haven't yet found the significance of this light, what it means, and what she should do about it. The dealers service departments are are all now closed for the weekend and she needs to get from Burlington Vermont to Portland Maine on Monday. Do any of you know what this light signifies, why it came on, and weather or not it's okay for her to continue to drive the car prior to taking it in for service to have it checked out? If any of you have an owners manual handy, or have experienced this issue, I would appreciate hearing about this light.

I don't remember seeing that icon before. My Clubman isn't home right now, but I'll check when Regina gets back.

Tell her to take the car in ASAP.  I had this happen in my '07 and eventually, the entire steering rack LOCKED UP, luckily once it was at the dealership.  Not just a loss of power steering...  A loss of ALL steering.

Two separate levels of this problem. It indicates a problem with the electronic steering wheel lock.

if the icon is lit in YELLOW it means the electronic steering lock is engaged and it says move the steering wheel before starting the engine.

if it's lit in RED it means the electronic steering lock has malfunctioned. It says at that point the engine will no longer start. If possible, do not shut the engine off. Contact your MINI Dealer.

Straight from the owners manual.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
