While at Moss today, Lelane and I were talking hitches. I remembered something about one hitch company ripping off MINI Do More's design. But I couldn't remember the name of the company. About that time, one of the Moss guys walked up and we started talking. He said they sell Curt hitches. Immediately, I remembered that name as the one that MINI Do More alleges ripped off their design. He said he doubted it and that Curt has been in the hitch business for years. I suggested he look into in over at NAM. So I pulled up some info and I'll let y'all decide. http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/2879982-post28.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/coupe-talk-2007/173284-new-reciever-hitch-option-coming-from-curt-mfg-2.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/clubman-talk-2008/178787-curt-hitch-for-clubman-good-price-hows-the-install.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/interior-exterior/155626-hitch-options-08-mcs-2.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/interior-exterior/182206-curt-trailer-hitch.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/interior-exterior/191432-minidomore-hitch-reciever-vs-cheap-one-on-ebay-need-help.htmlAmazing coincidence that a higher up at Curt ordered all 5 of MINI Do More's hitches. All got shipped to the same city as Curt mfg. Remember, MINI Do More supports the MINI community. Have you ever seen Curt mfg at MOD? Ever seen their add in MC2? One posts says Curt rates their hitch at 200#tongue/200# weight. However the MINI is only rated at 1440#. So obviously, Curt is uninformed. I'd prefer to support those that support the MINI community. Besides, a hitch isn't someplace you want skimp. Having said all that, I think the MINI Fiini hitch with its two point set up would be a better system to haul bikes with. Unfortunately, you're forced to use their hitch and attachments, where as MDM hitch uses a standard receiver and is more universal. I'd like to get one for the Clubbie and tow a little tear drop travel trailer some times.

Dale,
I was sure you were spot on with your comment. That's one reason I would not commit to that purchase. I was pretty sure that was the same name I had read about too. Thanks for confirming it. He is supposed to email me this week with what he finds. I'm interested to see what he has to say. You know I'm going to share it when he does.
I looked at some of those trailers. They are expensive. Did you look at the ones on the link on MDM? Would love one of them.

You need to come to an event so we can look at the installation of the trailer hitch. I've been thinking of this for my Clubman except I have the JCW aero kit and I'm not sure if it will work.

Hello Lelane, I hope you enjoyed yourself along with the other MINI owners that came and visited us recently in Virginia. I know the guys at Moss as well as myself, had a great time with all of you in Virginia. The cars looked great, the weather wasn't too hot, and there were plenty of stories. I wanted to catch up with you on the discussion we had regarding the hitches. While I'm still catching up, I did have a chance to do a quick search on Curt hitches on NAM and believe I did find the thread you and I had discussed. Having not been able to read through all of the threads regarding the issue, it's tough for me to come to a conclusion as to who is right or wrong. On initial reading it appears MINI Do More has a case for being angry, and rightfully so. However, again, as I haven't been able to compare the two pieces side by side, I can only come to a possible conclusion. We will be looking into MINI Do More in the coming months and the possibility of carrying their line. Until then, please drop me a line with any questions or comments I'm always interested to hear from owners and enthusiasts. Take care, Bryan Wilby Program Development Moss Motors 440 Rutherford St Goleta, CA 93117 (P) 805-679-7010 (F) 805-692-2525 wilbyb@mossmotors.com

And he doubted my knowledge!
Hate to say "I told ya so".
Who am I kidding? I LOVE to say that!!!!!
I'd like to see Moss step up and do the right thing and drop Curt hitches and start carrying Mini Do More. You know, support those who support the community!

In all fairness to Moss, their profits are probably much higher selling knock-off Curt hitches than with MDM, and they probably wouldn't be able to sell it for less than the MDM website.

Agreed. Maybe I was just hoping there was some sanity in the retail world. Ethics, maybe.

Well if we put this out to the MINI world that MOSS is selling a copy of MDM's hitch for Curt hitches maybe they will get the hint. Bryan didn't sound real convince to me.

I read most of the posts about Curt ordering the Mini Do More hitches and then selling "copies" of them. I did also look online at the two hitches for the Clubman. One big difference that I noticed was that while the mounting was very similar and the overall look was pretty close, it appears that Curt has beefed their copy up a little. They are both certified the same as Class I and that J____ Specification that I can't remember the number, but the MDM hitch is square tubed and only rated to 140/1400lbs tounge/trailer weight, where the new Curt hitches are 200/2000 lbs with round tubing. I know in truck hitches, hidden hitch was able to switch to round tubing and increase load while reducing size. I understand wanting to stick with MDM or MINI FINI (which doesn't even publish a rating), but one of the trailer options I was looking at is 1500lbs. Tough decision. That and who knows when I could afford a trailer anyway. LOL
