I'm sure some of you have read on NAM that Fiat's 500 is regarded as a MINI knock-off or look-alike.  Well, they're preparing to sell as many as 50,000 by end of year (maybe not all in the USA).  Read more here.

They will probably sell a lot of them initially, just like the Smart Car. But in the end, a sh*tbox is still a sh*tbox.

The front shot does not really show what I am talking about.  The NAM article(s) I read had more pictures.   102

Road & Track said it was 3"s shorter than the MINI and at the time only came with a 1.3 liter engine. Yea they will sell alot in Italy.

Yeh the car is pretty ugly. Seen a few of them while I was in Portugal last week. It's not the only fiat I have seen over here with things that look Mini either. Fiat seems to want to grow in the automaker industry by half-ass stealing mini's look to do so. I laugh. But seen plenty of Mini's over here. I am driving my shipmates nutsed while on liberty calling out every mini i see haha.

Don't forget the 500 Abarth, more or less their inhouse tuned toy with something like 170 HP. Imitation is the best flattery really.

they have been selling them in Italy for over 4 years now, they are hot cakes, and the Abarth, left me like i was standing still, sorry to say even the 1.3 runs like a champ, it may be but ugly but its a snappy little number, don't be fooled, it has some brass ones.  The competition between the MINI and the 500 is HUGE in Europe, it goes all the way back to their respective inseptions, so all joking aside, this really is a book you cant judge by its cover.

Thanks for the info, Tim.  It may be ugly, it may bring back bad memories, but I am intrigued to see how they do in the U.S.

Don't forget, they were dumb enough to buy Chrysler, so how smart can they be? Mercedes helped Chrysler build some decent cars, then they left. It'll be more interesting to see what Fiat does to Chrysler. Maybe a Fiat 500 with a Hemi.....

How about that Fiat 500 with 170HP vs. a Smart with a 160 BHP Smartuki setup?   112

There would be no winner in this scenario.
