I had never been to Chincotaegue before 2009. When Kathy set up this run I was so anxious to go. For those of you that didn't make it then, do yourself a favor, don't miss this years event! Chincotaegue is literally a blast from the past. It's so laid back. Some great architecture, super friendly people and lots of neat shops. Not to mention Mr. Whippy Ice Cream! Christy and I made a trip out to the refuge and had a great time beach combing. Be forewarned, dogs aren't allowed, EVEN IN CARS! Kinda made us mad they wouldn't let Maggie the wonder dog in, but rules is rules I guess.
A few of our members stayed overnight in Chincoteague, I think that would be the way to do it. Even though we had a great dinner and were still home with plenty of time to spare.
Put this run on your list for 2011!
Personally, I'd like to have the Island all to our selves. Far too many people come in for those festivals. I liked the Island the way we had it. Very un crowded and much more appealing to me.

This past November, eight Classic Mini's from Mid Atlantic Minis did a lap of the eastern shore during our annual Turkey Run. This included a tour and lunch stop on Chincoteague Island. With the excpetion of about 10 miles, I planned the entire route to keep us exculsively on back roads which run parallel to Rt 13, in both the north and southbound directions. We met up at the south end of the Bay Bridge Tunnel and shoved off at 8am. We took roads paralleling the east side of Rt13 on the northern leg, and didn't see our first traffic light for something like 105 miles. The afternoon run south had us on roads paralleling the west side of Rt 13. We capped off the 9.5 hour 230 mile round trip day by crossing the Bay Bridge at sunset.
Take a little extra time and stop off at the Wallops Island Visitor Center on the road that takes you out to Chincoteaque. It's a very nice attraction even if you're only remotely interested in the NASA Space Program.
If I'm not avaialable to join you, do have a great drive.

We missed the last trip but we plan to make this one. Having the island with out all the people would be great.

I've lived in VA for 12 years and haven't been to Chincoteague...yet!
My vote would be to go during a non-festival weekend.

I didn't make the last trip either and would love to be part of the next one. Non-tourist event would be great.

Okay, I think we have settled on a non-festival time. We did go on a Second Saturday last year which is why all the shops had crafts and things going on. That timing seemed pretty good. I'll see what we have coming up on calendars, but I'm thinking summer months.
Last time we went, we met at the north end of the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel and went straight into Mr Whippies for indulgent ice cream sundaes. Then off to the Pony Farm to get up close to ponies and take photos (gift shop too). A drive out to the island to see ponies in the wild and walk on the beach or see the lighthouse. There was group shopping downtown with all the craft stores open, then we gathered for dinner at Wrights (which was very nice so I think we will eat there again).
There is also NASA to see, a drive around the island to look around, little go karts to rent and drive around, BBQ stands, museums, shops, and boat tours. So much to do, hard to do in one day. So no one has to stick to a schedule I select, it can just be a good excuse to make the drive! Dogs are permitted in many hotels, but they are not permitted (even in a car to go out to the outer island where the ponies, beach, and lighthouse are located.) There is also a Pony Express Bus for drop offs around town if you prefer to park and ride.
FUN FACT. Ponies are auctioned off each year, so many residents have a pony enclosed in a little fence in the backyard or behind their business. So you can play spot the pony on your drive arounds.

We can also opt for a cruise up to Ocean City, MD. There's a long straight road up-and-down the beachfront, with shopping all over the place. I have not been up that way in over ten years. Can get some beach time in, too.

My Aunt always used to take their cabin cruiser up there for the pony swim. I would always ask her and my Uncle to bring me a pony back. One time they said they did but he jumped out of the boat and swam back to the Island. Seems fishy to me. I don't think a pony would do that. It just doesn't seem natural to them. I think my mother might have had something to do with me not getting a pony.............. Hey, maybe Christy needs a pony And to stay on track, I had an absolute fantastic time and was really mad I had never went there before. I won't miss this time either. I'm in! Don't miss it, the place is fantastic!
