It's been many years since I dorve these roads and when I did I was clipping along on my own, during the week, in an Rx7. Speed was relatiely brisk at some points.
For those who have driven it on a weekend, and with a group of cars that may have stopped at some of the scenic overlooks, what's your best recollection of an estimated overall average speed. I'm trying to guage the length of time it's going to take to get from Front Royal to Roanoke, over a Saturday and Sunday next month, and I'd like to calculate it based on a fairly realistic average speed.

It's not a car; it's a lifestyle

You probably thought of this already but did you try Google mapping the route for time? The program uses listed speed limits, but throwing in some food and necessary stops tends to make those estimates close to actual for me. I'm no speed watcher.

Having done the Blue Ridge Parkway Tour with Tar Heel MINIs the last few years, I think you can easily average 45+ on the parkway. Skyline Drive is only 35MPH so it's a bit slower and a bit more congested. I can tell you I've "heard" of jaunts of 60-70 on the BRP. Not any MINI group I've ever been part of, but individually, there have been rumors.
Once you clear the Rte 60 Buena Vista exit, it is usually pretty empty. On the BRPT we leave Afton at 8 AM-ish on Friday, make a few stops and hit Roanoke for lunch. If I had to guess, leaving Front Royal by 8 or 9AM you could be in Roanoke around 4 or 5 I'd bet. That should account for traffic and some sight seeing.

Excellent reporting, Dale...just what I was hoping for. Your numbers come pretty close what I was calculating. I just wanted to double check it with someone who has done the run....thanks.

Be careful with your speed, they are very quick to pull you over and give a ticket for speeding

I can tell you that 40-45mph is about as spirited as you want to go due to park enforcement officers on Skyline. Durring the summer months, they really crack down. Group runs tend to be a lot more conservative. Weekends get crowded, quick!

Skyline is way more patrolled than the BRP. On the entire 469 miles over the last two years I've seen three rangers total. But we still stay pretty sane.

I live about 5 minutes from The Inn in Afton. Any dates in mind for the journey?

They have a dinner Thursday evening for those that came in from out of town somewhere up in that area. I usually drive out there EARLY Friday morning. It's a blast. If you can only do part of the run, DO IT! It's a blast. Last year we had over 40 MINI's at the kick off point and got up to almost 50 along the way.
