MINI U.S.A. recommends installing this once every 3,000 miles.

You can also get the STP Fuel Treatment bottles (red in color) at any auto parts store.  STP offers a four-level scale of products.  If you really think your injectors are gummed up, get the Level 3 STP Fuel Injector Cleaner.  My dad has been using these for years, and I believe they do work.

That will/should help keep the injectors cleaner. But it won't do much for the R 56 engine's carboning problem. Since it's a direct injection motor, we don't have the luxury of the fuel "washing" the back side of the valves or valve pockets. But anything will help!

Starbrite Startron is all the rave these days. Does all the great things the best injector cleaners due plus it somehow breaks down ethanol. The marine guys love it as it cuts repairs way down and prevents the ethanol from eating away their boats hull tanks.

I don't remember what i was searching for originally but I was reading about something called Seafoam
http://www.seafoamsales.com/.
With 1/3 can in oil, 1/3 can in fuel and 1/3 can put directly into the engine, It is supposed to be very good for cleaning injectors and carbon.

There are also hundreds of youtube videos too

Seafoam is a great product. I treat my vehicles twice a year with it. I usually use anything by Lucas as far as Cleaners, lubricants, and Octane boosters go.

I plan on seafoaming my MINI and the Jeep this weekend. It made an amazing difference in the Jeep last time I did it. At 150K miles, it ran better than it has in a looong time. Looking forward to the MINI improving some as well.

iirc, if you put Seafoam in the engine itself, you need to do an oil change within about 500 miles.

I use fuel injector cleaner from Prestone once every 20k miles or so.  And only name brand gas (mostly Exxon and Shell, but I've maybe had to resort to BP a couple times).

I've done the Seafoam in the PVC about every 35k miles.  Have not had much smoke, so hopefully a sign that I am not getting any carbon build-up.  That or it is caked on so badly the Seafoam can't touch it.
