I have a lovely 1973 Leyland Mini 1000. By lovely I mean it has lots of rust, bad paint and hasn't been run in years. Fortunately I know that running one of these is a labor of love and you have to have a lot of love. I have been putting off fixing Alfie (that would of course be the car in question) for a good long while. I basically got him for free when I traded a worthless truck for the little guy. I just did a full tune up while taking a break from all the much needed patch welding. I finally got the little engine to start, but it idles a little and then revs rather high and then comes back down to idle for a moment and repeats the high rev cycle. I have tried adjusting the timing. and it either runs like this or stalls instead of idling. I have my throttle cable about as far out as possible, the choke closed at this point and fresh gas in it that only finally got to the engine to start it. At least it actually starts without any ether spray, but I still can't even think about driving it like this. Does anybody have any ideas?

This could be caused by a number of tuning issues, but more often than not this raising and lowering of the idle (known as "hunting") will be caused by ineffective "poppet valves" in the throttle plate of SU carbs. Most likely your '73 Mini 1000 initially contained some form of pollution control equipment, some of whch may or may not still be in operation. These valves were a part of that system, and may not be needed any longer. If you'd like to PM me please do so, and we can get into more details there. Also, let me know where you live, as help may be close by.

Looks like I'll be rebuilding the carburetor. I cut down the amount of air flowing into the engine a little and it just revved really high and stayed there. Looks like the throttle plate is either not working right of the poppet valves are stuck open I guess.

I agree with Howard and since you plan on doing a carb rebuild I would make sure you do the fuel filter.  Last thing I would suggest is getting your fuel pressure checked.  I wouldn't be surprised if the fuel pump is on it's last legs too.

Well, finally got around to taking off the carb. Turns out it is a lot worse off then I originally thought. I'll need a whole new one as so many things are wrong with it. I am honestly surprised that the little car even ever started. If any one happens to have and HS2 or HS4 laying around that they know works please let me know as I would be rather interested in taking it off of your hands for a reasonable price.

If it's parts you need for Alfie, might I suggest Steve Gibbs at coopertune.com ?

If anybody has these carbs, it'll be Steve.

Wow, I can't believe it took me so long to see this.  Steve Gibbs happens to have an HS2 and an HIF44 of mine at his shop that are for sale.  If you haven't found one already he can help.
