Okay, we've all (hopefully) heard about Seafoam. It's a magical elixir that you put into your motor which makes a lot of smoke come out of the back of your MINI (or other car). But along with that smoke is a lot of the old deposits that degrade the performance of our cars.
Here's the technical explanation, Our cars have direct injection, where the fuel is shot directly into the combustion chambers. On most cars the fuel enters the cylinder head through the intake manifold and down the intake runners of the head. In doing so, the air fuel mixture "washes" away the carbon deposits left over from the oil vapors, exhaust gases, etc recycled through the motor. Since we don't 'have the luxury of that "washing effect" deposits build us rather quickly. The build up drastically decreases performance. We don't notice it simply due to the time it takes to build up.
SEAFOAM to the rescue!!!!
I did my '09 Clubman S Friday. I've been meaning to for some time now. I am GLAD I did. After 15 minutes of thick smoke (which I expected) it now runs and responds like the SPORT button is on all the time. Amazingly, that's what it USED to feel like. Amazing how it slows down over time.
If anyone wants to have a SEAFOAM party up here at the shop, grab a can and lets make a date. You will also be glad you did!

Glad it worked great for you. Just to clarify.... 2nd-gens have direct injection. 1st-gen MINIs don't. But that does not mean I'm not willing to participate in the party.

True Adam, BUT, Seafoam WILL help any car with a few miles. It makes a marked difference on my 130K mile Jeep Wrangler too. I've already decided, my Clubbie will get a Seafoam treatment every quarter. Y'all get your bottles of seafoam and lets make a date. You'll be pleased with the outcome. Of course the neighbors will hate me, but they'll get over it!

Did this party happen?
If it hasn't yet I would love to take part in that, my 05 MC is about to reach 100k and I'm trying to keep up on the maintenance.
Let me know and I will join as well!

Nope, no SF party yet. Pretty much anytime some of us wanna get together, we could do it. Grab a can of Sea Foam from an auto parts store such as Advance, Carquest, NAPA, etc.
We can set a date pretty much anytime.

I wonder if a can of seafoam would help unstick a hydraulic lifter? I think I may have some sludge in one of mine because i have a very slight tap at idle. I believe it may have gotten stuck from a long period between oil changes. It's a mild tap/tick coming from the valve cover area. I put a stethescope on it and believe I can tell which cylinder it's coming from. One forum suggested pulling the rocker assemblies off and very carefully compressing the lifters to squeeze out old gunk. This may be what I have to do - I did a cam install, so am comfortable pulling the rockers. On the other hand, if a Seafoam treatment might clear it up - I'm game for that for sure! Suppose I could put half can in the oil pan and half thru the brake vacuum or just in the tank. Anyway - suggestions, insight, comments are welcome. Thanks!

I was going to say you don't have lifters, but I have learned otherwise. The 1st-gen engines don't use them. The 2nd-gen engines do. I would say using the Seafoam certainly can't hurt in terms of trying to get rid of deposits. If memory serves, you dump it into your oil, go about 200 miles, then do an oil change.

Let me start off by saying sweeet! I love the sound of the seafoam my 04 mini coop s could really use a booster shot. I am guessing by the posts this party still hasn't happened yet? I am in Richmond and would really enjoy a good mini party I could even help put one together if need be.

Dale we really ought to plan this. Can we use your office? Seems like we have a pile of interest! Perhaps pick us a date?
