Okay, MINIacs, here's what my "people" tell me. In north central NC, there is a mysterious race track. Here's the theory. Some auto manufacturer, Toyota or Volvo supposedly, contacted NC about building a factory. They tell NC that if you build us a test track, we'll build a factory. Seems the manufacturer pulls out of the deal, but NC already has a track built. I rule out Toyota since they already have a factory. As does BMW for the sake of argument.

I'm planning on a trek out that way sometime and check it out for myself. My local racers don't seem to know much about this. Very interesting.

Go to Google maps, or the like and pull up NC. Find I 95 and scroll the picture down to exit 176 at route 46, just south of the VA/NC state line. Just east of 95 is a good size build, that's a Lowes. Just north of that you'll see the track. I've done some web searches and can find nothing.

Here ya' go, Dale. I've been there with a freind who races a Birkin 7, and the place is still a pretty well guarded jewel of a venue. At two hours, it's half the driving time to VIR.

You beat me to it! I also just figured it out  080

Here is the link to a pdf of phase one of the track.

It sure does look like a very secure facility.

i drove it last year with the Tidewater BMW CCA in the M6....it was a blast!!  it's not really a "race track". the track was designed to test automotive suspensions, tires, and brakes; that's why the strange configuration.  depending on what direction you drive it, you can have off camber turns and some really strange forces....but it is fun and well maintained.  the operations building was still being finished when we were there, but there are several classrooms and facilities....the staff was also extremely helpful in making sure we had a great event....could be a fun "day at the track" type event.....r3

How interesting is that!  I drive down NC Rt. 46 when I go to Wilson, NC.  Never knew the track was near there.   icon_eek

Yes, it's only a two hour drive to that track, as I can get to Wilson, NC from my house in just over three hours.  The route I take is more enjoyable.  Here's a Google Maps link that lays out the roads.
