Ok so I posted up on NAM looking for some insight as my Mini is having a small, but seriously annoying issue. Here is what I posted:

Ok, so long story short, when I bought my 06' MCS (54k miles), it came on stock SLites with Federal Tires, but the tires are worn out on the inside front and cupped in the rear with bad wear.

So I went to Discount Tire and bought brand new wheels (Drag DR38's in Charcoal) and Hankook Ventus V12 tires. I took the tires, got them mounted and had the front and rear tires balanced.

Before I put them on I installed my new Swift Lowering Springs and HSport rear lower Camber arms then went and got a four wheel alignment.

After that I went home and put the new wheels on. Discount Tire included plastic hub rings that fit correctly. I used the stock bolts, they fit in barely and I had to use a thin walled socket to put them on, but they seemed to go on ok. After I got them on and tightened them up, I took the car for a ride. Rode great until I get on the highway and then around 65mph the steering wheel starts to vibrate.

With the SLites on, while the tires had tons of road noise and NVH from being all tore up, they did not vibrate like the new wheels and tires are doing.

I have 2 thoughts in my head and I was wondering if anyone could provide other possible issues.

1.) The wheels need to be rebalanced as in the place didn't do it right.

2.) Do I need different wheel bolts for aftermarket wheels? The stock ones barely fit into the holes and may wobble? What do stock wheel bolts get torqued to?

Any insight you guys could provide would be great. I need to get off these ragged tires on the Slites, I'm sick of the noise.

Since then, I have gotten in contact with Discount Tire where I bought the wheels and had them send me a new set of hub rings and ordered Gorilla Spline drive lug nuts. The new hub rings were aluminum (sent for free, nice) and were the proper 73mm to 56.1mm, so I cleaned the center of the hub really well and lightly sanded off any surface rust. Reinstalled the wheels last night with the new hub rings and the new lug bolts and took it to work this morning. Still having a vibration at 60+ mph. When I say vibration, if I let go of the steering wheel it jars evenly back and forth slightly, the car still goes in a straight line, but I did not experience this issue with the slites on the car even with the chewed up tires.

So I'm thinking maybe they aren't balanced perfectly, but I am looking for a known good place to take it where others have had success to have the wheels looked at and rebalanced if necessary. I am in Norfolk, so the closer the better.

Thanks and sorry for the long read  023

Okay, here's my opinion. Actually, opinions.

What I've found from nearly 40 years of being in the car hobby, when it comes to vibrations, there are LOTS of places to look. If you feel the vibes in the steering wheel, it's probably in the front tires. Not always, but probably. First thing I'd try is swapping tired front to rear and driving on the same stretch of road. If the vibes are still there, I'd rule out the tires/wheels. But for the moment, lets stay with the tires/wheels. If the vibes go away, I'd have all the tires rebalanced and checked for trueness. Both for lateral run out side to side wobble) and radial run out (out of round). That could certainly be an issue. I've seen others with Vetus tires that were out of round, but that likely isn't the cause. I'd agree with swapping out the centering rings, not sure how I feel about plastic ones. Also, the lug bolts probably weren't the problem, but they are often overlooked during a wheel swap. I ALWAYS check and see how many threads protrude through the wheel seat BEFORE installing them. I'd like to see a minimun of 3/4 inch or 19mm depending on your measuring scale. as for torque, I've been told to torque my second gen wheel to 110 ft/lbs. But I've seen that number vary.

So, scenrio #1 given the centering rings and lugs were not the problem and the problem still exists with the new tires in the original positions. The first question I'd look at is did the car have a vibration with the OLD TIRES. You said it didn't. Even with the crappy wear and harsh road noise. To my thinking, that would eliminate a component of the car causing the vibes. Things like tie rod ends, ball joints shocks and mounts and even the alignment. SO like I said, this is where I'd swap front to rear. Drive the same speed over the same road and check for the vibration. Maybe even swap back to the srockers again just to use that as a control.

Scenario #2, swapped tires front to rear, changed the centering rings and the lug bolts. Vibes are still there. Go to another tire shop. Have them dismount the tires and check the WHEELS for lateral and radial run out. Remount the tires, have them check those for lateral and radial run out. Re balance. If the car doesn't vibrate with the stockers on but does with the new wheels/tires, they are most surely the culprit. Worse case, let someone try the wheels on their MINI and see if they have the same problems. To put it simply, you need to divide and conquer. SomeTHING is causing the problem. Ya just gotta find out what it is!

By the way, just an FYI,if you look at ANY new tire, somewhere on each sidewall, you'll see a small red/yellow/green/orange or some other color, dot. Usually no more bigger than 3/8 of an inch. THAT spot is the widest part of the tire or the point of lateral runout. Every tire manufacturer denotes that on a new tire.

Keep us informed.....

Thanks for all the info!

I picked the car up yesterday after having it road force balanced. The vibration is greatly decreased and doesn't happen at all sometimes. So I started looking into other possibilities. So far I have;

Put the correct aluminum hub rings on
Put on the correct fitting Gorilla Lug nuts
Road force balanced

BUT I remember reading on NAM somewhere about kicking the front tires when looking at purchasing a used MCS, so I just did it, maybe out of frustration?, but either way I noticed that when I kicked it, sure enough there is play in the tire. So going back to NAM, it appears that my front control arm bushings are shot. Could this cause the odd vibration?

On a side note, the car drives much nicer without the cupped/beat up tires on it and the vibration is negligable when it actually happens now, but I started the car this morning and got a brief smell of possible burning coolant from the heater, it went away, but a little more research shows I may be headed to a bad heater core as well.

So the repairs are starting to Pile up, and while I've been able to handle everything myself so far (with some Great help from ScottRiqui) I'm fighting to keep myself involved and want to keep repairing it... love the car to death so far, but man is it taxing!
