My new 06 MCS has the new MINI 14 MM lug bolts and the 16 x 6.5 Comp SSR's are drilled for 12MM lug bolts.

Should I sell what I have and buy new wheels that will fit or should I drill out the SSR's.  Who would I get to drill the old rims?

Welcome to the club!

The hard question is do your new wheels take stock bolts,  or tuner bolts?

If stock bolts, you are ok, and can drill out the wheel holes.

If it takes tuner bolts, there are no tuner bolts available for the 14mmx1.25 thread size.

IMO, wheels are not drilled out for a certain thread pitch. Your OE studs should work as long as you can get a lug tool around it.

Have you tried taking a OE lug off and putting it into your new wheels?

I've been a bit unclear, the issue is not thread pitch, but the diamater of the lug bolt.  MINI change the spec from 12 to 14 and my rims from my 2004 MINI ( COMP SSR's ) no longer fit the new 06 car.  The 14 mm lug bolt will not fit through the rim.

I've never delt with drilling out lug holes, is this a safe practice? :?:   And can anyone recommend a shop to do it?

Any competent machine shop should be able to do it Sean.
Give the guys at Abacus a call.

I don't want to sell them, but I am concered if taking 2mm of each lug hole will affect the integrity of the wheel?  As you all know, I'm no rocket scientist :o

Obe, I spoke with Abacus, and he wants to see a wheel, he feels good that the wheel would still be ok, but he would like to have the tires unmounted.  Oddly enough, that might be the straw that makes me buy new rims.  $$.  We3lcome back BTW.

Like we talked about the wheel should be fine.

I would ask them about extending the cone seat. That is what maintains the torque once set. Lose too much seat surface and the bolts will loosen easier than might be good.

I know this has been asked, but have you tried a 14mm bolt in the wheel?

The old MINI wheels that I have have holes from the factory that will accept 14mm bolts without mods. The cone on the new 14mm bolt is the same size as the cone on the 12mm bolts.

I am surprised that an after market mfg would bore holes to a tighter fit than MINI. 119
