ZOMG! You sold the Mini?

So, I've picked the toughest part of the year to make efforts to improve my diet, and consequently, my health, weight, and wardrobe availability.  I am already devastatingly handsome, thus no improvement can be made in that department by losing weight.  8)

Anyhow, things are off to a good start, and I figured I'd share with you all in efforts to keep my life open and honest, because frankly by exposing my desires with the world, the world will align itself to make this easier for me.  Seriously, it's that whole Law of Attraction thing.   :D

My goal by this time next year is to have dropped 50 lbs... I have 120 to lose before I'm in my insurance bracket for a healthy weight.  Yep, starting out at 300 kids.   The good news?  I'm down to 287 already.  (Stupid first weeks are always the best!)

Oh, what diet am I "doing?"  It's the cut out sugar and crap food or you'll have toxic levels of blood sugar, keep getting fatter, and die of a coronary at age 34 diet.

I'm gonna write a book.

That's wonderful news Ben! Congrats on the decision to be healthier and to having had a good start.

Just think of it as giving yourself the best present of all for the Holidays: good health. It's one of the best presents anyone could have, at any time of year.

Ben, you know that Fuzzy and I are on that same road, I'll provide help encouragement and recipes if you want. :)

It's not easy but it is very worthwhile.

Glad to see you're not going for the FAD diets.  Terry and I are here for you. Some key points I have learned along the way:

Eat Healthy
Small Portions
No matter what you were told as a kid, you do not have to finish your plate.
WATER
Exercise - 3 ten minute walks just as beneficial as a 30 minute walk and park as far away as you can from entrances to places.

My favorite - if you have a salad keep the dressing off  the salad. Serve or have served dressing on the side and dip your fork in the dressing while eating the salad.  You'll be surprised on how much salad dressing you'll have left over. :D

Most important you have family and friends who love you and want you around for a long time :D

Ben, I'm in the midst of the same lifestyle change as well.  Congrats on the weight loss, I know you can keep it up, I've dropped almost 30 since August ( 6 inches from my waist, make clothes shopping nearly a weekly thing.)

Call me if you need anything, recipies, ideas, support don't hesitate.  This is something you can accomplish and control.

This is great - are we going to have a Mini Diet support group?  I am doing weight watchers and am watching the weight very slowly disappear. I'd rather lose it faster, but slow and steady is fine with me - just as long as I truly get rid of it and it doesn't find me again.  Water is essential, so are vegetables - most in their natural state are very low calorie and they had wonderful fiber to your system and fill you up and keep you satisfied.  If eating veggies aren''t your thing without dip - you are in luck.  We have a unbelievable dip and very few calories - you can eat 1/12 of the entire recipe and it only counts as 1 point in weight watchers lingo.
Are you ready here it is:
in a saucepan over med heat melt 2 8oz packages of FAT FREE cream cheese with a can of low sodium tomatoe soup and 1 box of sugar free lemon jello (trust me on this) - stir until well mixed and remove from heat and let in cool.  While the mixture is cooling dice an onion, celery, carrots and bell pepper ( i usually use the red) now mix the diced veggies into the cooled mixture and add 1/2 cup fat free mayo.  Stir well and serve with fresh raw veggies.
Enjoy

Thanks guys... good to know I'm not alone.  (I knew I wasn't, but still.)  As far as FAD diets go, yeah...been there, done that Wendy. lol.  I can't deal with a diet that permanently says NO to things I love.  I have to mentally allow myself permission to indulge in light moderation from time to time.  I'm not talking hitting the buffet line... I just mean maybe it's ok now and then to visit Doummars and have an ice cream cone with friends.   :D

So for the record, Debbie and I are using nutrisystem in order to re-learn proper portions and balanced meals.  It's actually turning out to be very inexpensive, and I like that I don't have to count or measure much of anything.  Breakfast consists of their breakfast entree (a wide variety of choice there, including muffins, eggs, cereal, breakfast type bars) a small portion of fruit, a small dairy serving or protein, and a low gi carb (like a piece of whole grain toast)  Lunch is an Entree (all have been very good actually) a dairy or protein again, a salad (all veggie, 2 tbsp of fat free dressing are ok) and a low gi carb.  Snack of a fruit and a dairy or protein, and Dinner is an Entree, 2 vegtables, salad or fruit, a fat serving, and a low gi carb.  oh...and a dessert later.

ok, got all that??  LOL  Essentially it cuts out sugar nearly totally, adds complex carbs when they are there, and a lot more veg and fruit than I'm used to.  So far I haven't been too hungry really  (I nearly forgot what hunger felt like in all honesty before cutting back).  I've been able to pull back on my acid reflux perscription significantly as well.  Clearly sugar has been a huge trigger for that.

Thanks again guys...  Looking forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.   :D

So, just an update... starting at the gym tomorrow after work for the first time in 6 years.  I'm nervous... mostly about how sore I'll be.  Thankfully the place I'm going has someone crafting the workout for me each visit so I don't over do it and don't under do it either.  I hit 279 the last morning of 2006... 26 lbs. gone so far, and with effort and luck, this lifestyle change will accelerate my loss, and help me regain my mobility again.  By that I mean I've been dealing with knees that will dislocate at the drop of a hat, and a wicked bad back that forces me to move like a man twice my age.  Hopefully I'll gain some flexibility and strength along the way.

So...I'm glad this isn't just some new years resolution thing.  It's just some good old fashioned resolve in progress.  002

That is excellant Ben! I know what you mean about the knees too, mine hurt all the time before I lost weight. Also, I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes without a lot of effort, it's so nice to be flexible again.

You are going to make it!

Way to go Ben!  I lost 20-25 on the cruise, mainly doing a diet switch and exercising.

My salad's dressing was mustard - no sugar or calories, yet adds a kick to the veggies.  Took a lot of grief for that in the Mess, but oh well....

Also made sure that I lifted weights three times a week as well as run/ellipitcal/bike the other three.  Even the light weights at the start help - the muscles use energy to rebuild.

Speaking of all this....  time to go back on mine.  Well, except for KC Chiefs playoff days!  ;-)

Good idea on the mustard Doug... never thought of that, but I'm a fan of exotic mustards.  Most dressings are too sweet for my tastes.

At least you know that going off your diet due to KC Chiefs playoff time will only last something less than 2 hours. I don't think you will hurt your diet in such a short time span   . I think you made a mistake when you put an "s" on the end of the word "day". At least your team is going. More than I can say about mine.
