hello, i am new here. found the site while looking for some info on my tires wearing out.
i have just over 14,500 miles on my '05 CS and have not rotated my tires yet. yesterday i noticed some uneven wear on my left front tire, outer edge, but no comparable wear on my right front... running dunlop sp9000's. the rear tires also seem alright. is this a common issue with these tires? the dealership told me that "because of the way we drive, with all the hard rights, this is a common wear pattern". i have been looking for some documentation on this being "common" and have had no luck.
help!

what kind of air presure are you running. Sometime to much air will make the tires wear uneven.
And glad you found us, Welcome to the group. :D

I've been noting that too
I'm on my second set of tires, this time Yoko's; first were Pir' run flats. Again my left side are worn on the outer edge much more than the rights. And the rights show more wear on the inner edge.
I front back rotate every 3k, and have a compressor so tire psi is checked frequently. (42 psi is a bit high acording to the factory spec as I recall....but the wear pattern for high pres tends to be the center of the tread vice off to one side)
there's no pull to suggest an alignment issue & that would be a wierd pattern for an align' issue any who. so I decided yep...too many spirited cloverleafs. hasn't slowed me down....just has me thinking about which tires to buy next time.

i just spoke with a random person in line at lunch who rides the same wheels and tires as myself... they have already had to replace 2 tires in under a year and her car has not been in the shop other than those 2 times. mine on the other hand has been in the shop because of a faulty locking system, the airbag sensor went bad in the passengers seat, and because the blow-off valve on the supercharger (somehow?) became stuck open and was causing an error in the computer...
now the tire issue... if the tire pressure was too low, wouldn't the tire pressure sensor have lit up on the dash? if the alignment is off wouldn't the other tires show proportional wear? with having the outside edge of the drivers side tire worn to the 2nd level of rubber, that would mean i am running my tire pressure to low, correct? are the dunlop sp 9000's bad tires?
jelly.

None of the 4 MINI's we have had have shown uneven tire wear as related.
Normal wear, slightly higher on the outside of the front tires, but nothing like you are experiencing.

I'm one of "those" people that don't own a MINI!

now the tire issue... if the tire pressure was too low, wouldn't the tire pressure sensor have lit up on the dash? My understanding, which is not synonymous with being correct, is that the flat tire monitor does not sense tire pressure but rather a difference in rotation from one tire to the others. A tire that is going flat will rotate slower than the fully inflated tire and that will set off the monitor. Thus, if all the tires were over or under inflated, the monitor would not go off. Dam, that almost sounded scientific, just like if Obe had said it!! :D

try not to fall out of you chair fair readers....but I'm agreeing with
the dealership told me that "because of the way we drive, with all the hard rights, this is a common wear pattern".
I can think of no other reason for this pattern on my tires.
And wrt to the 'low' sensor, yes it is documented as being tied to the ABS and wheel rotation speeds. It doesn't matter what the psi is ... it is tied to variations of the rotation speed (based on change of diameter due to psi). Therefore if all tires are over inflated, or all underinflated - or even if they were radically different the last time the system reset....the warning lite won't come on.

the dealership told me that "because of the way we drive, with all the hard rights, this is a common wear pattern". Not sure if the above statement is true but I started to think about my daily driving and every turn that I drive hard is a right hand turn. I only have five left turns and none of them are hard. I still have not noticed unusal ware on the left side. I do rotate tires every 5,000 miles and get about 30,000 miles from each set of tires. Don :D
